Boy Scouts to honor Wilson
TEMECULA -- Gerry Wilson will receive the Distinguished Citizen Good Scout of the Year Award from The Boy Scouts of America Tahquitz District on Oct. 1.
Wilson and his family founded Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula in 1996. He was born in Montana, but spent most of his youth in Minneapolis, where he was also a Boy Scout. He is the father of four and grandfather of seven.
The Distinguished Citizen Good Scout Award is presented to individuals whose personal ethics and family values are representative of the Scout Oath and Law. Past recipients include President Gerald Ford, Gov. George Deukmejian, Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne. Tahquitz District honorees include Dan Stephenson, Dan Atwood, Terry Gilmore and Joan Sparkman.

Political scientist to speak
TEMECULA -- Author Mike Byron will speak when Citizens for Democracy meets Wednesday at the Mary Phillips Senior Center. A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the program starting at 7.
Byron, a professor of political science and history, has analyzed the relationships between the issues of our time: Peak oil, climate chaos and economic instability. In his new book, "The Path Through Infinity's Rainbow: Your Guide to Personal Survival and Spiritual Transformation in a World Gone Mad," he outlines a plan for navigating the coming years of change, and how citizens can participate in the creation of a new and sustainable political economy.
Citizens for Democracy is a grassroots, nonpartisan organization dedicated to enhancing the democratic process.

Scouts to participate in run
WILDOMAR -- Scouts from Wildomar will participate in a walk for the organization Run for the Fallen on Sunday.
Cub Scout Pack 332 and Boy Scout Troop 332 will meet at the Memorial Wall at Elsinore High School at 8 a.m. and then proceed on the walk.

Cultural group plans meetings

Assistance program under way
Representatives are available at two Southwest County locations to provide free assistance to people needing help applying for homeowner or renter assistance.
Eligible residents must be 62 years or older, or blind or disabled, and a United States citizen, designated alien or qualified alien. Claimants must have owned and occupied a home or mobile home on Dec. 31, 2007, or paid at least $50 in rent each month with a household income in 2007 of $44,096 or less.
Aid is also available from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays at Mary Phillips Senior Center, 41845 Sixth St., Temecula and 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays at Murrieta Senior Center, 41717 Juniper St.
No appointment is necessary. The service will be offered until Oct. 14.
Participants must bring proof of age or disability, property tax bill if a homeowner, federal and state tax returns for 2007 and any other income records.
Sports center offers drop-in volleyball

TEMECULA -- The second Sara's Way Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 29 to raise awareness of the importance of boating safety.
The event is dedicated to Sara Michelle Margiotta, who died Aug. 4, 2007, at age 10, in a boating crash.
