Summer basketball camp being offered
FALLBROOK —— St. Stephen Lutheran School is sponsoring a summer basketball camp Aug. 1 through 5, which is open to boys and girls entering third through sixth grades in the 2005-06 school year.
It will take place on the school campus at 1636 E. Mission Road, and will teach youths basketball fundamentals, individual and team game concepts, and skills development. All participants will receive a camp T-shirt, a basketball and daily refreshments.
The camp is separated into two sessions based on the child's grade. The morning session from 9 to 11 a.m. will be open to grades three and four only. Bloodmobile visit scheduled
DEL MAR —— The San Diego Blood Bank bloodmobile will accept blood donations at a blood drive hosted by Mary's Tack and Feed from 1 to 6 p.m. today at 3675 Via de la Valle. The bloodmobile will be parked in the parking lot.
Donors will receive a medical history review and mini-physical, which includes blood pressure, pulse, temperature and an iron level check.

Among the projects the group has completed are the installation of a computer lab at the shelter to assist women in learning computer skills and collecting books for a shelter library. It has raised funds to help renovate apartments in the long-term shelter and collected toiletries, food, towels and other necessities.

Seniors offered taxi vouchers
ESCONDIDO —— The Senior Service Council offers a taxi voucher program from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays for seniors ages 60 and older who live in Escondido. Seniors must have no other means of transportation and have an annual income of $22,600 or less for one or two people.
Vouchers (good up to $6 each way) are available as needed for doctor and medical appointments, three sets a year for chiropractor, 12 sets a year for therapy and two sets a month for pharmacy. Vouchers are mailed out daily on calls received between 9 and 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays. No vouchers issued after noon.

Event to highlight Panama's culture
SAN DIEGO —— The Museum of Man resumes its popular "Tower After Hours" series with "Panama!," a lively tribute to San Diego's Panamanian community, from 6 to 8 p.m. July 28. Midnight Catfish Craze planned
POWAY —— The ninth annual Midnight Catfish Craze tournament will be held from 4 p.m. to midnight Aug. 5 at Lake Poway, 14644 Lake Poway Road. The lake will be stocked with more than 2,000 pounds of channel catfish for the event.
Daily fishing permits cost $4.50 for adults and $2 for youths. Cost to enter the tournament is $3 in advance or $4 the day of the event, plus the permit fee. State fishing licenses also are required. CPR classes offered in Poway
POWAY —— The city's fire department offers Heartsaver CPR classes from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. the first and third Saturdays of each month. In addition to adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation, instruction will be given on how to reduce the risk of heart disease, how to assist choking victims and how to recognize the early warning signs of a heart attack. Hands-on skills are practiced on lifelike mannequins.
This is a certified class, and upon completion, a two-year card will be mailed to participants. The last two hours of the class are optional and cover CPR for infants and children. Class size is limited to 12 students. A $20 course fee paid in advance is required. The fee is $10 for those ages 55 and older. Each participant will receive a manual and pocket mask. To qualify, individuals must have been age 62 or older on Dec. 31, 2004, or blind or disabled; be a U.S. citizen or designated alien; have a total household income of less than $39,699; owned and lived in their own home in California on Dec. 31, 2004, or lived in a qualified rented California residence; and paid $50 or more a month in rent during 2004. Homeowners will need to provide information about their 2004-05 property tax bill.

YMCA executive director receives award
RANCHO PENASQUITOS —— Cindi Phallen, executive director of the Rancho Family YMCA, was honored as one of San Diego's outstanding businesswomen at the recent Tribute to Women and Industry Awards Dinner. The TWIN Award acknowledges women who have made great strides and achievements in the community.
Phallen has overall administrative responsibility for the Rancho Family YMCA, which serves the areas of Rancho Penasquitos, Sabre Springs, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Mira Mesa and Poway. She oversees an operational budget of $2.6 million. Through her leadership, the YMCA has seen a 75 percent increase in funding since it opened five years ago. The facility now serves more than 9,500 youths annually on and off site in programs such as summer camp, gymnastics, swim lessons, dance, youth sports, karate and Y Guides.
Phallen also has been nominated for the YMCA Outstanding Managerial Award for her fiscal responsibility. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Poway, the YMCA Association of Professional Directors and serves on the board of the Diamond Gateway Chamber of Commence and the Pomerado Hospital Advisory Council.

Surface Design on Fabric is topic of workshop
OCEANSIDE —— Internationally exhibited artist Christie Dunning will hold a one-day workshop, "Surface Design on Fabric," from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Oceanside Museum of Art School of Art, 219 N. Coast Highway. The class will explore different ways to get color onto fabric, including dyeing, overdyeing, printing, painting and stamping. Oceanside Hi-12 speaker meeting slated
OCEANSIDE —— Sandy Broce, director of community services for the Women's Resource Center, will speak at the Oceanside Hi-12 No. 708 meeting at noon July 28 at Grandma BB's, 539 Vista Bella, Oceana. Broce will discuss the services provided by the center and how the community can assist the growth of the center.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary hosts meals
VISTA —— The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 7041 will host an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner along with fish and chips from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 29 at the post, 1717 E. Vista Way. The cost of the spaghetti dinner is $5.50. Dessert will be available for $1 extra.
The auxiliary also will host the Sunday breakfast at the post from 8:30 a.m. to noon July 31. A shrimp and cheese omelette for $4 along with many popular breakfast entrees will be offered. Proceeds from these meals will go to the community services fund. Call (760) 724-7041.
Home-delivered meals available to seniors
VISTA —— The McClellan Senior Center offers a home-delivered meal service to Vista residents who are over 60 years of age with an illness or disability and homebound. A nutritious, hot meal or your choice of salad is delivered Monday through Friday, with frozen meals also offered for the weekend. A contribution of $3.50 is suggested for each meal. Italy is theme of special luncheon
VISTA —— A special luncheon, "Tony's Bistro —— A Taste of Italy," will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. The buffet luncheon will include spaghetti, linguine and penne pasta with choice of marinara, meat or Alfredo sauce. Other entrees include Italian pasta casserole, meatballs, grilled chicken strips, Caesar salad, fresh fruit platter, breadsticks, spumoni and Italian Jell-O. For seniors 60-plus years of age, a contribution of $3 is suggested. For those under 60, there is a $5 charge. Christian Women's Club luncheon set
SAN MARCOS —— "Hawaii Calls" is the theme of the San Marcos-Vista Christian Women's Club luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 15 at the Lake San Marcos Country Club, 1750 San Pablo Drive. The cost of the luncheon is $11 inclusive. Entertainment will be by Professional Hawaiian Dancers, with choreographer Marcia Garcia. Guests are encouraged to dress in Hawaiian style. The speaker will be Robin Vurbeff of Carlsbad, a gifted and inspirational speaker who shares "A personal quest for fulfillment."

OCEANSIDE —— Tri-City Computer Club will meet at 1 p.m. today at the Salvation Army Community Center, 3935 Lake Blvd. The speaker will be member Rob Cohan who will demonstrate software he created to quickly find and display phone numbers, addresses, files, etc. He will make the software available free to all members.
