Ride to raise funds for children's causes

Caring 4 Kids will host its fifth annual charity ride Saturday, starting with an 8 a.m. pancake breakfast in Wildomar and ending at Lake Skinner.

After the breakfast at VFW Post 1508, motorcyclists will leave about 9 a.m. for a through Lake Elsinore, Idyllwild and Temecula before arriving at Lake Skinner Recreational Park around noon, where there will be lunch, entertainment and prizes.

Riders are asked to donate $40, which will include a T-shirt, food and prizes.

The Caring 4 Kids organization was formed by Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District employees who saw a need for fundraising in the Lake Elsinore community for charitable children's organizations. In past years, funds from the ride have gone to the Lake Elsinore Community Center, Cops for Kids, the Boys & Girls Club, HOPE, youth sports and Community Outreach Ministry.

Seniors invited to football game

SUN CITY -- An informational meeting about the Super Senior program will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Paloma Valley High School.

Super Seniors is a collaboration of the Menifee Valley PTA Council, Perris Union High School District, the Kay Ceniceros Center and Partnership for Healthier Communities.

The meeting will discuss the benefits of membership.

Women's club plans crazy auction

The Menifee Valley Woman's Club will hold a "Crazy Auction" at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sun City Mobile Home Estates.

The $5 cost includes an auction paddle, snacks and cold drinks. Auction items may be viewed from noon and 1 p.m. Proceeds will go toward the club's scholarship fund.

Rose society offers classes

TEMECULA -- Temecula Valley Rose Society will begin its third Saturday of the month free education classes this week at Rose Haven Heritage Public Garden.

The class, from 9 to 11 a.m., will feature a consulting rosarian talking about general rose care and fall cleanup in the garden.

Elks to host bingo party

LAKE ELSINORE -- Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge will host a bingo party Sunday to raise funds for the Elks National Foundation, which provides scholarships for high school seniors.

Doors will open at noon with games starting at 2 p.m. There will be special buy-ins at $25, as well as extra cards.

The party will take place at the lodge's temporary location at Trevi Entertainment Center, 32250 Mission Trail.

Candidates to address community group

SUN CITY -- A candidates' forum is scheduled when Riverside County United Communities meets Saturday. Breakfast is at 8:30 a.m. and the forum will start at 9:30.

Scheduled to speak are congressional candidates Julie Bornstein, Robert Hamilton and Bill Hedrick, state senate candidate Arthur Bravo Guerrero and assembly candidates Carl Wood and Grey Fransen.

SUN CITY -- The American Legion Sun City Post 657 meets at noon on the third Monday each month in North Town Hall.

Author to address library friends

LAKE ELSINORE -- Novelist Joan Dial will speak when the Friends of the Vick Knight Community Library meet at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 22.

Dial was a longtime resident of Canyon Lake. She has written historical romances, family sagas, women's fiction, mystery and suspense under number of pen names.

Dakota Club to meet Oct. 23

MENIFEE -- A song title contest will highlight the next meeting of the Sun City Dakota Club at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Menifee Community Center in Wheatfield Park.

The Dakota Club promotes fellowship and goodwill and fosters the mutual interests of persons who at one time resided in the states of North or South Dakota.

Vets group helps with forms

TEMECULA -- Veterans of Foreign Wars will offer assistance to veterans and their families in filling out forms and filing for programs such as disability, rehabilitation, education, pension, death benefits and employment Oct. 23.

The assistance is offered from 10 a.m to 2:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at the Temecula Valley VFW Post 4089, 28075 Diaz Road.

Lions plan golf tournament

MURRIETA -- The Murrieta Lions clubs will hold their third annual golf tournament Nov. 14 at the SCGA Golf Course.

The cost is $85, which includes golf, cart, goodie bag and lunch. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the shotgun start is at 9 a.m.

Proceeds of the tournament, hosted by Murrieta Breakfast Lions Club and the Murrieta Evening Lions, will be used for local Lions projects.

Home tour tickets available

TEMECULA -- The Temecula Valley Woman's Club will hold its Annual Holiday Home Tour and Gala Nov. 21 to 23.

The Salute to our Warriors Gala will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 21 at Keyways Winery. It will include dinner, entertainment, military color guard, no-host wine bar, live and silent auctions and desserts.

Tickets are $100, which include a Holiday Home Tour ticket. Proceeds are earmarked for the club's Wounded Veterans Van Project.

The Holiday Home Tour, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 22 and 23, will feature three homes in Temecula's Wine Country that will be professionally decorated for the holidays.

There will also be a variety of vendors, artists and artisans, a food court, coffee and wine bar, and musical entertainment. Tickets are $30 in advance, or $35 at the door.

Think Tank meets regularly

TEMECULA -- The Think Tank group that meets twice weekly for brainstorming and problem solving is expanding its offerings.

The group meets at 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Carl's Jr. on Ynez and Winchester roads to discuss just about any subject except politics and religion.

The group also offers a manual arts foundation to train teenagers and is now looking for volunteers for a visiting angels program to visit veterans in convalescent facilities.

Lions Club selling discount books

MURRIETA -- The Murrieta Lions Club is selling Entertainment 2009 discount books to raise funds for the club's sight conservation projects.

The books offer discounts on a host of restaurants, theaters, sports activities, special attractions and hotels. They will be on sale until Dec, 20 for a cost of $20.

Elks holding anti-drug contests

TEMECULA -- Temecula Valley Elks Drug Awareness Committee members are holding drug awareness contests for area schoolchildren.

There is a poster contest for third- to fifth-grade students and an essay competition for those in sixth through eighth grade. The theme is "Get Smart â€- Don't Start."

Awards will be given to the first, second and third place finishers for boys and girls in both contests.

Students wishing to enter either contest should ask their teachers for entry forms and guidelines. The deadline to enter is Nov. 7.

Registration set for Menifee pageant

MENIFEE -- Registration for the upcoming Miss Menifee Scholarship Pageant begins this week. The pageant will be held Nov. 1 at Freedom Crest Elementary School.

There are nine age divisions for ages of 1 day to 20 years. Contestants must live or go to school in Menifee. Prizes and scholarships will be awarded to the queens.

Science of pumpkins to be discussed

TEMECULA -- The science of pumpkins will be highlighted from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Imagination Workshop, the Temecula Children's Museum.

Participants will learn fun and interesting facts about pumpkins, taste pumpkin foods and have a chance to create a pumpkin in true Professor Pennypickle style.

Brazilian Guitar Quartet to perform

HEMET -- The Brazilian Guitar Quartet will open the 36th season of the Hemet Community Concert Association with a program of music by Bach, Villa-Lobos, Albeniz and others at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First Southern Baptist Church.

Association subscribers can attend five concerts for $50. Individual concert tickets are $25 each on the day of the concert. Students 17 to 21 are admitted at half price and children 16 and younger are admitted free.

MSJC to present Lectures Among the Vines

TEMECULA -- Mt. San Jacinto College will begin a series called Lectures Among the Vines this month at three Temecula wineries.

Each event includes a lecture, lunch and wine tasting. The cost is $30 per lecture.

MSJC biology instructor Roy Mason will give the first lecture, "What's in your Genes & Who Else Knows About it," on Oct. 22 at Wilson Creek Winery.

On Oct. 29, MSJC art instructor John Seed will present "Art Collecting for Every Budget" at Baily Vineyard & Winery.

MSJC English instructor Larry Barkley will discuss "Watching a Shakespearean Play" on Nov. 5 at Leonesse Cellars.

Anger topic of conference

TEMECULA -- "I am Woman. Should I Roar? … Anger -- What Shall We Do With It?" will be the topic of a seminar from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 25 at Sunridge Community Church.
