Church plans patriotic show
TEMECULA -- Rancho Community Church is staging a patriotic presentation next week.
"Let Freedom Ring," a musical presentation featuring a live orchestra and choir, will be presented Friday. The performance will celebrate America's heritage and honor members of the military.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but a goodwill offering will be taken to raise money to benefit the newly established Temecula/Murrieta Rescue Mission. Nonperishable food items will also be collected.
Child care will be available for children younger than 3.

Homemade book exhibit planned
MURRIETA -- A collection of handmade books will be on display this month at the Murrieta Public Library.
Risa Gettler, a calligraphy artist and instructor, melds her passion of letterforms, concepts and illustrations in unique handmade books. The exhibit will run from Friday though July 31.
The Murrieta Public Library is at 24700 Adams Ave. in Murrieta.
Car group meets Saturday
TEMECULA -- The Temecula Valley Motoring Enthusiasts will meet at 8 a.m. Saturday at Cosi restaurant.
Cars on display usually include Ferraris, Vipers and a restored 1966 Lotus Cortina. All cars are welcome; participants are asked to bring car magazines to trade.

Monthly jazz concert planned
LAKE ELSINORE -- Jazz Generation will perform Sunday as the Lakeside Dixieland Jazz Club presents its monthly afternoon of Dixieland and swing music.
All listeners, dancers and musicians are welcome. Musicians with instruments, especially reeds and trumpets, can participate in mixed sets.
The event runs from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at the Elsinore Women's Club, 710 W. Graham Ave. The featured band plays at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 for members and $8 for the public.

Model railroad club to meet
SUN CITY -- Members of the Sun City Model Railroad Club will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the community room at Provident Bank.
The group will continue to draw up plans to create tables/modules in anticipation of promoting model railroading at schools, senior living centers and fairs. At this meeting, the group is expected to complete its layout plans to present to young people at a local church.

Church to host 5K walk
MURRIETA -- The Greater Works Church will host its 2009 5K Community Walk on July 11.
The fundraiser supports the church's backpack outreach efforts, food and clothing banks and other outreach programs.
The walk will be at 25823 Jefferson Ave. in Murrieta. Registration costs $20 and includes a T-shirt.

International journalist to speak
WILDOMAR -- Charles Wiley, an international commentator and journalist, will speak at 1 p.m. July 18 at the Mission Trail Library.
Wiley has a colorful history that includes being arrested eight times by secret police, organizers of the free event say. He was arrested by the KGB while on the hunt for stories and was in a Cuban dungeon. He has covered 11 wars and his articles and photographs have been published in newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times, Newsweek and Time.
Wiley will describe life in the U.S. during World War II and a young GI's memory of service overseas.
The free program is sponsored by the Friends of the Mission Trail Library and the Wildomar Historical Society. The library is at 34303 Mission Trail in Wildomar. For information, call Edy at 951-678-0141.
Volunteers needed for Day of Caring
The United Way of Southwest County is gearing up for the second annual Day of Caring and is seeking volunteers and organizations that need help, as well as sponsors to donate materials.
The Day of Caring will be Sept. 19 this year, and is a day when teams of volunteers complete projects in the community.

Center offers drop-in volleyball
LAKE ELSINORE -- The Lake Community Center hosts adult drop-in volleyball from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
Participants must be at least 16 years old. The cost is $1 per session.
Play is supervised by sports staff, and participants are asked not to bring any children or adult spectators.

New film, music society forms
TEMECULA -- A new organization has formed to help keep the Temecula Valley International Film and Music Festival rolling.
The September festival has brought visibility and artistry to the area and given voice to innovative filmmakers and musicians for more than 10 years.
Members of the new Temecula Valley Film and Music Society can play a key role in continuing the tradition.

Lymphedema seminar planned
MURRIETA -- Michelle's Place will host an educational seminar on lymphedema at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
The disease is marked by localized fluid retention as a result of a compromised lymphatic system. In women, it is most prevalent in the upper limbs after breast cancer surgery.
Celeste Morely-Blancher from the Rehab Group is certified in lymphedema management. She will talk about the prevention and identification of lymphedema as well as treatment and the statistics of prognoses.
After the seminar, Morely-Blancher will offer fittings for those in need of compression sleeves.

Blood drive slated next week
TEMECULA -- San Diego Blood Bank is planning a blood drive that will run from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday.
The drive, which is sponsored by KATY-FM, will be at the Ronald Reagan Sports Park, 30875 Rancho Vista Road in Temecula.
Donors should be at least 18 years old, healthy and weigh at least 110 pounds; the process takes about an hour. With written parental consent, 17-year-olds may also donate.
Michelle's Place hosts group
MURRIETA --- A self-help group for women dealing with breast cancer meets at 7 p.m. Wednesdays at Michelle's Place.
Survivors, those newly diagnosed and women undergoing treatment can share feelings, learn methods of coping and get resources. The group meets the first Wednesday of each month.

Preventing dehydration is subject of talks
TEMECULA -- Inter Valley Health Plan is offering a free talk on preventing dehydration Thursday and July 20.
The wellness workshop is part of the Vitality Health series that the nonprofit Medicare Advantage organization is offering.
The first talk will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at The Chateau at Harveston, 40024 Harveston Drive in Temecula. Another session will be offered at 12:15 p.m. July 20 at the Murrieta Senior Center, 41717 Juniper St. in Murrieta.
