SOLANA BEACH - The support group for active-duty and retired military officers experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression and anxiety meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, 225 Stevens Ave.

Psychotherapist Martin Landau-North, also board certified in traumatic stress, will facilitate the group once a month. The group is designed to help members achieve recovery through mutual support as well as provide updated information about causes and treatment, eliminating myths about anxiety disorders and depression. Hospital auxiliary sponsors blood drive

FALLBROOK - The Fallbrook Hospital Auxiliary will host the San Diego Blood Bank for a blood drive from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane.

Donors will be treated to apple pie made by auxiliary members and served with ice cream donated by Major Market.

Participants will have the opportunity to join the blood bank's new Donor Difference program, which includes access to an online store for donors and the ability to track cholesterol, pulse and blood pressure after each donation.

Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A good meal is recommended before donating.

Fallbrook Library Friends schedule book discussions

FALLBROOK - The first Book Talk of the 2007-08 season will be at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Fallbrook Public Utility District board room. The selected book is David McCullough's "1776," a history of the American Revolutionary war with a strong focus on the decisions and role of George Washington throughout the war. The discussion will be led by Gloria Mattson.

Sponsored by Friends of the Fallbrook Library, the community book club meets the second Thursday of the month from September though June.

  • Diabetes blood sugar screening will be offered from 8 to 9 a.m. Sept. 7 and 21. Do not eat, drink or take medications before coming in. No appointment is necessary.

Church of the Resurrection festival on tap

ESCONDIDO - The Church of the Resurrection will hold its annual festival Sept. 14 through 16 on the parish grounds, 1445 Conway Drive.

The free festival will feature live entertainment, arts and crafts booths, homemade baked goods and other goodies, game booths and ethnic food booths and a beer and wine garden. Bingo will be played from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Another festival highlight will be the "$10,000 Big Deal Raffle," with a $10,000 first prize and six runner-up prizes totaling $12,000.

Learn watercolor fundamentals

ESCONDIDO - Local watercolor artist Tom Tiedeman will teach "Watercolor Fundamentals" through the Palomar College Venture Program. The class is open to students of all skill levels. Students can learn numerous techniques and paint several smaller projects that will help them to develop a more complete project.

Actor to discuss, sign memoir

ESCONDIDO - Actor Farley Granger will discuss and sign his new book, "Include Me Out: My Life From Goldwyn to Broadway," at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Escondido Public Library, 239 S. Kalmia.

Before the lecture, there will be a free screening of one of Granger's most famous films, Alfred Hitchcock's "Stranger on the Train," beginning at 6 p.m.

Granger, now 82, appeared in more than 100 films and TV shows in his 60-year career. Robert Calhoun, Granger's co-author and partner for 50 years, also will appear.

Altrusa to host 'Laughs for Literacy' event

ESCONDIDO - Altrusa International of Escondido will host its annual comedy night, "Laughs for Literacy," on Sept. 20 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Karen Rontowski will be the featured comedian.

Become a naturalist at Daley Ranch

ESCONDIDO - The Daley Ranch Volunteer Association is accepting applications for positions as volunteer naturalists. Training classes will be held Saturdays, from Sept. 22 through Nov. 17 (except Nov. 10).

Trainees will learn about the cultural and natural history of the area, as well as training in basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Classes will be kept small to allow more one-on-one training. Upon completion, volunteers will be able to lead visitors on tours of the ranch trails and talk about what can be seen from the peaks, valleys and scenic overlooks.

Soroptimists to host rock 'n' roll concert

ESCONDIDO - Soroptimist International North County Inland will host a '50s and '60s rock 'n' roll concert featuring the fun-loving band, The Rockit Scientists, at noon Sept. 23 at Kit Carson Park Amphitheater, 3333 Bear Valley Parkway.

Cunningham book is topic

OCEANSIDE - KOCT-TV will present a special edition of Journalist Roundtable from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 6 on Cox cable channel 18. Host Eric Larson will be joined by Denis Devine, opinion editor for the North County Times and Logan Jenkins, columnist for the San Diego Union-Tribune.

San Diego Union-Tribune Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Dean Calbreath will discuss his new book, "The Wrong Stuff - The Extraordinary Saga of Randy "Duke" Cunningham, the Most Corrupt Congressman Ever Caught."

Midwives group hosts 'Birth' play in Vista

VISTA - A midwives' advocacy group will sponsor a benefit performance of "Birth," a monologue-style play about women's childbirth stories, at the Avo Playhouse on Saturday, Sept. 8.

Karen Brody's "Birth" is a confessional-style comedy/drama that tells the funny, poignant and sad birth stories of eight women. The play, inspired by Eve Ensler's similarly styled "The Vagina Monologues," will serve as a fundraiser for the Calfiornia Association of Midwives.

"Birth" was born last year at the San Jose's City Lights Theatre Company, and since then has been produced elsewhere to raise more than $10,000 for regional maternity care groups. The play tells the stories of eight women from all walks of life and with very different childbirth experiences, from a home-birth, to a Caesarean section, to a medical-assisted epidural delivery.

The Vista performance is being produced by two local midwives, Andrea S. Meyer of Encinitas and Michelle Fruend of Oceanside. Both women have been working as home birth widwives for a decade or more. The show is being directed by midwife Gabrielle Lucido, who portrays one of the women in the play. The other seven roles are played by local women who have either had home births, are student or professional midwives or dulas.

"Birth" author Brody is a playwright, mother and founder of BOLD, the Birth on Labor Day global movement to make maternity care more mother-friendly.

"Birth" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Avo Playhouse, 303 Main St. in Vista. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $22 for seniors and students. For tickets, call (760) 721-2110.

Optimists hold annual spaghetti dinner

Faculty art on exhibit at MiraCosta

Normal aging, dementia seminar

Library offers 'Brown Bags and Books' program

4S RANCH - The 4S Ranch branch of the San Diego County Library, 10433 Reserve Drive, will offer a "Brown Bags and Books" program from noon to 12:45 p.m. the first Friday of each month beginning Sept. 7.

Restaurant sales to benefit Fire Station 33

RANCHO BERNARDO - In remembrance of the anniversary of 9/11 and in conjunction with the "Rescue Fire Station 33" project, Souplantation/Sweet Tomatoes restaurant group is joining in the fundraising efforts to renovate Fire Station 33.

From 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 11, Souplantation at 17210 Bernardo Center Drive will donate 15 percent of the pre-taxed sales receipts of those who present "fun-raiser" coupons to the "Rescue Fire Station 33" project. Jewish literature discussion series offered

The San Diego County Library and the City of San Diego Library systems will offer three free five-part series titled "Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature - Identity and Imagination."

Golf tourney to benefit Looks Like Me

POWAY - Looks Like Me, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces free of charge to financially disadvantaged children younger than 18 with cancer and other medical hair losses, will hold its eighth annual golf tournament and benefit dinner Sept. 7 at the Maderas Golf Club, 17750 Old Coach Road.

The tournament will be an 18-hole, four-player scramble format with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Cost is $225 per golfer, which includes a round of golf, green fees, golf cart, lunch, refreshments and a gourmet dinner. Non-playing guests can attend the benefit dinner at 6:30 p.m. for $65. Opportunities will be available to win a trip to Costa Rica, $100,000 hole-in-one and many other prizes. Looks Like Me is also accepting prize donations for the live and silent auctions or donations to become a hole sponsor.

Veterinarians to talk about pet care

SAN MARCOS - Iams and Wal-Mart have teamed up to celebrate veterinarians across the country with Vet Appreciation Days.

Visit the San Marcos Wal-Mart store, at 732 Center Drive, between 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 7 and talk with local veterinarians about pet wellness and nutrition. San Marcos church offers Life Groups

SAN MARCOS - Mission Hills Church is accepting registration for its fall Life Group Session.

Life Groups offer an opportunity for individuals to meet with people who have similar interests. Sports Groups include tennis, basketball, softball, fishing, golf and backpacking. Connect Groups include puppetry, quilting and scrapbooking. Other groups include Bible study and service groups.

'Kash for Kids' golf classic planned

FAIRBANKS RANCH - The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego will hold its "Kash for Kids Million Dollar Golf Classic," sponsored by Colliers International, on Sept. 24 at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club. Lunch and check-in will take place at noon followed by a shotgun start tournament, and a dinner and auction.

Proceeds from the tournament will help support the programs and services offered by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego.
