'Cell Phone Science' set at library

Teens can watch Japanese animes
ESCONDIDO -- The North County Anime Network and the East Valley Branch Library will host a free screening of Japanese anime for teens Jan. 10 in the Vineyard Room of the East Valley Community Center, 2245 E. Valley Parkway.
The animes to be shown are "Idol Project," "Kare Kano," "Hyper Doll," and "Legend of Crystania," all rated PG-13. Doors open at 11 a.m., with the first anime beginning at noon. Emblem Club to hold installation of officers
ESCONDIDO -- The 56th installation of officers of the Escondido Emblem Club No. 161 will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Escondido Elks Lodge, 2430 S. Escondido Blvd. Supreme President Billie Lee and Supreme Marshal Betsy Walter of Freemont Ohio No. 156 will do the honors of installing the officers for a two-year term.

American Sign Language class set
ESCONDIDO -- Escondido Adult School will offer a new American Sign Language class from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Jan. 13 at the school, 3750 Mary Lane. The class is an introduction to ASL and can help people communicate with the deaf community.

Library to host teen movie event
ESCONDIDO -- The East Valley Branch Library will hold a Popcorn & Movie teen event at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 16 in the Vineyard Room of the East Valley Community Center, 2245 E. Valley Parkway. SAN DIEGO -- Linda's 53rd International Teddy Bear, Doll and Antique Toy Show and Sale will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 10 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Scottish Rite Center, 1895 Camino del Rio South. Coast live oaks available for fire victims
Through Jan. 31, the San Diego chapter of the California Native Plant Society and RECON Native Plant Nursery are donating coast live oaks to fire victims to help rebuild their landscapes.
There is a limited quantity available at two nurseries: Las Pilitas Native Plant Nursery, 8331 Nelson Way, Escondido, (760) 749-5930; and Rancho Jojoba, 11935 Highway 67, Lakeside, (619) 504-2017.
Recipients will need to show identification and provide their name, address and parcel number of the affected property.
Children can audition for 'The Frog Prince'
POWAY -- The Missoula Children's Theatre will hold auditions for its production of "The Frog Prince" at 4 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road. Children in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to audition for the play. Experience is not required. Charlie Jones discusses cancer survival
DEL MAR -- A provocative program entitled "Heaven Can Wait: Surviving Cancer" will be presented at the Del Mar Library at noon Jan. 11 featuring authors Charlie Jones and Kim Doren. They will discuss their book on cancer survival.
Jones is a La Jolla resident who has been a network sportscaster for four decades who was inducted into the National Football League Hall of Fame in 1997 and is a prostate cancer survivor. CARMEL VALLEY -- Enrollment applications for Canyon Crest Academy, a school of choice set to open for ninth-graders in fall 2004, are due Jan. 9. Riding clinics to benefit fire victims
POWAY -- The Southern California Pony Club will host dressage and jumping clinics taught by Jane Armour on Jan. 10 and 11 at the Poway Valley Riders' Association grounds, 14336 Tierra Bonita Road. The event also will include a used tack sale, a saddle fitting clinic and a tack cleaning service. Proceeds will benefit Pony Club families who lost their homes in the Cedar fire.
Armour practices classical European training methods with a focus on improving horse and rider bonding through positive reinforcement. As a long-time supporter of the Pony Club, Armour is donating her services for the cause.
The clinics are open to children and adults of all levels. Participants can chose from private, semiprivate or group lessons in dressage or jumping activities on either day.

Garden club to host rose expert
POWAY -- The Poway Valley Garden Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 14 in the Pavilion at Lake Poway.
Dick Streeper will give a program that includes instruction in rose care. Club members and others will practice the skills they learned on the roses planted in the rose garden at Lake Poway.
Streeper is a retired lawyer who writes a monthly column on roses for the San Diego Union-Tribune. He regularly judges international rose trials in Great Britain and the United States and has served on the board of directors of the American Rose Society for 12 years. He is the founder of the municipal rose garden in Balboa Park and has taken active roles in the creation of two modern rose gardens in China.
The Poway Valley Garden Club meets the second Wednesday of each month, September through June, and welcomes guests to all of its meetings.

Baton/ribbon classes offered

Contestants sought for pageant
SAN MARCOS -- Contestants are being sought for the 2004 Miss San Marcos Pageant to be held Feb. 21 in the Hearth Theatre at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive.
Young women ages 17 to 22 who are in high school or have graduated and are San Marcos residents are eligible to enter. The winner of the pageant will serve as an ambassador for the city for the coming year. Prizes and gifts will be awarded to the queen and her court courtesy of the community.
