Seminar to address mental health issues of seniors
SAN MARCOS - Palomar Pomerado Health will present a "SOCS BOX" seminar, a "toolbox" for serving seniors in the community, from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. today at Meadowlark Community Church, 1918 Redwing St.
Designed for volunteer visitors, personal caregivers, as well as other interested people, the seminar will focus on how to identify and respond appropriately to mental health issues such as depression, loneliness and grief.

Gregory Smith, San Diego County tax assessor-recorder-clerk, will discuss the future of real estate values and inform the group about property assistance programs for seniors.

Boardwalk dedication set for June 2
DEL MAR - The San Dieguito River Park will open a new section of the Coast to Crest Trail on June 2, coinciding with National Trails Day.
The new section of trail is a 1,200-foot long boardwalk constructed on the north bank of the San Dieguito River, beginning on the east side of Jimmy Durante Boulevard. The boardwalk includes interpretive displays offering nature study opportunities along the walk, which leads to a viewing platform overlooking the river.
The community is invited to a champagne christening and for a stroll along the boardwalk at 1 p.m. June 2. Parking will be available at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Enter at the main entrance to the fairgrounds and park in the south corner. Cross Jimmy Durante Boulevard at the crosswalk to access the boardwalk.
Marathon Construction, the contractor constructing the 500-plus-acre San Dieguito Lagoon Restoration Project surrounding the new boardwalk, built the support system and the Del Mar Rotary Club finished the project by installing the 2,400 boards that create the surface of the boardwalk. The Rotary Club is joining with the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy for a fundraising project to "sell" individual planks of the boardwalk for a tax-deductible donation of $100. Contributors can have their name inscribed on a small plaque that will be affixed to the rail above their plank.

Young Artists Symphony concert set
ESCONDIDO - The Young Artists Symphony, conducted by Mary Gerard, will perform at 1 p.m. June 2 in the Center Theater at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 N. Escondido Blvd. The program will include works by Dvorak, Ravel, Copeland, Shostakovich and Stravinsky.
YAS includes young musicians from throughout the county. Students ages 12 to 22 will be featured in this final concert of the season. Also performing will be the Fiddle 'n' Bow Orchestra (the YAS preparatory orchestra).

Youth Flute Choir's benefit concert on tap
CARLSBAD - The San Diego Youth Flute Choir will perform its annual benefit concert, "Enchanted Melodies," at 4 p.m. June 3 at the Carlsbad Community Cultural Arts Center, 3557 Monroe St.
Guest artists will be Grammy Award nominee flutist and composer Lori Bell and guitarist Ron Satterfield, who will perform the music of Duke Ellington and George Gershwin, as well as several selections with the San Diego Youth Flute Choir. In addition, the flute choir will perform a diverse program of folk tunes, music by Gabriel Faure and a selection of contemporary works.

Soiree to benefit arts education in schools

Camp for children with bipolar disorder set
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego-based organization Club Xcite will host Camp Xcite, a specialized summer camp for children with bipolar disorder, from July 30 through Aug. 10 in North County.
Camp Xcite will provide a small group environment where every child gets personalized attention and his or her needs and interests will be met. Camp activities will include beach day, paint ball wars, water park day and other camp activities. These team building activities will help to complete the camp's mission to have children naturally build friendships with one another despite their mental obstacles.
All camp counselors will receive extensive training from top professionals. Training will be held June 9 through 13.

Volunteers sought for arts festival
LA JOLLA - Volunteers are needed for the 21st annual La Jolla Festival of the Arts to be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 23 and 24 in the east campus parking lots at UC San Diego. Job assignments include merchandise and gate sales, parking and traffic control, children's area, artist ambassadors and food area cleanup.
The festival will feature the works of more than 190 nationally acclaimed artists from across the country and cuisine from a variety of vendors. Proceeds from the event, which is produced by the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Foundation, will benefit more than 25 adaptive athletic programs for San Diegans with disabilities.

Vista man receives culinary arts award
Geoff Duran of Vista was named Student of the Year in the Culinary Arts and received an honorary scholarship toward his education at a recent banquet at Santa Barbara City College.
Duran was chosen for the award based on his hard work, consistent effort, dedication, high grade point average and passion for his career. He is a second-year student at the college, working toward a double associate's degree in the culinary arts and hotel management. He will graduate in spring 2008 and plans to transfer to New York University or the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to pursue a bachelor's degree in hotel management.
Duran also works full-time as a cook at the Four Seasons Biltmore, Santa Barbara. He is a 2005 graduate of Rancho Buena Vista High School.
Archaeology event planned for June 9
SAN PASQUAL VALLEY - The San Diego Archaeological Center invites families, Scout troops and outdoor enthusiasts to its "Hike Through Time in the San Pasqual Valley" event from 10 a.m. to noon June 9. Under the guidance of center staff members and volunteers, participants will explore the archaeology, history and botany of the valley.
Bring water, sunscreen and a camera and wear appropriate footgear for the easy to moderate, one-hour hike from the center to the San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park and back.
Upon returning to the center, the event will continue with activities such as cordage making, creating pinch pots and native seed planting.

Burn Institute honors local heroes
Local residents, including Manuel Elizarraras Jr. of Ramona and Rick White of Carlsbad, were honored at the Burn Institute's 34th annual Spirit of Courage Awards Banquet, which took place May 31 in San Diego. Each year the event pays tribute to individuals in the community who have risked their lives in an effort to save another from burn injury or death by fire.
