Boys & Girls Clubs of North County prepares for gala fundraiser

FALLBROOK -- Excitement is building as the Boys & Girls Club of North County announces its annual Auction and Hollywood Glamour Ball to be held April 28 at Pala Mesa Resort.

This "Making a Difference" event is the highlight of the club's fundraising program and benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of North County by providing funds to continue programs and activities serving nearly 2,500 children and their families in the communities of Fallbrook, Bonsall and Pala.

Arlyne Ingold and Ingold Family Foundation are this year's title sponsors.

Additional sponsors include: Del Rey Avocado, Supervisor Bill Horn, River Village Properties, Community National Bank, Pardee Homes, Paradise Cadillac-Chevrolet, Coldwell Banker and Cafe Primo.

The evening will be begin at 5:30 p.m.with a silent auction featuring more than 100 items including sports memorabilia, beauty services, dinners, art, jewelry, plants and antique furniture. The evening will continue with dining, entertainment and a live auction.

More than 20 live auction items will include a signed Willie Nelson Guitar, AKC Labrador Retriever puppy, fantasy vacation anywhere in the world, including airfare credit, Elite Golf Package for four at premier golf resorts, a private gourmet dinner prepared in your home by a renowned chef, custom-framed Tango Dancers portrait, plus many more trips and items yet to be announced.

Deborah Zoller, president of the board of directors said, "Our organization operates three facilities in Fallbrook, Bonsall and Pala and four after-school sites at Maie Ellis, Fallbrook Street, Live Oak and William Frazier schools. We reach over 4,000 youths through our programs with Power Hour, computer training, music programs, sports leagues and special events. All of these programs are designed to promote self-confidence and self-esteem in our members so they can grow up and become contributing members of our society."

She added, "The Boys and Girls Club budget is $1.3 million. These funds are made available through various fundraisers throughout the year and from outstanding community support. The Auction and Hollywood Glamour Ball is yet another way the community can support the mission of the organization to help it maintain its image as 'The Positive Place For Kids.' It's the best 'win/win' we've ever seen; you get to have the time of your life and fill your heart up at the same time making a real difference for our kids."

Tickets for the auction and dinner are $175 per person or $1,750 for a table of 10.

Parkinson's support group to meet

FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Parkinson's Support Group will meet at 2 p.m. March 26 in Conference Room B at Fallbrook Hospital, 624 E. Elder St.

Lenten fish fry dinners continue

FALLBROOK -- The Knights of Columbus Lenten fish fry and bakes will take place Fridays from 5 to 7:30 p.m. through April 7 in Sheridan Hall at St. Peter's Catholic Community, 450 S. Stage Coach Lane. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children. Proceeds benefit local charities and organizations.

Donations sought for shower for expectant military moms

FALLBROOK -- Fallbrook resident and community volunteer Eileen Delaney is seeking donations of baby items for a shower for Camp Pendleton military mothers-to-be.

The shower is being organized by Kim Felshaw and is scheduled for 2 p.m. May 27 at South Shores Baptist Church at 32712 Crown Valley Parkway in Monarch Beach.

Delaney, head of Operation United Families, said supporting this endeavor is one way the Fallbrook and Bonsall communities can show their support and appreciation for the sacrifices military families make. Tax assistance offered

FALLBROOK -- Free state and federal income tax preparation will be offered from 8 a.m. to noon weekdays from Feb. 1 through April 14 at the Joslyn Senior Center, 399 Heald Lane. The service is available to all Fallbrook residents, regardless of age, and is sponsored by the AARP in cooperation with the IRS.

Community garage sale planned

FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Community Center will host its annual spring rummage sale from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 1 at the center at 341 Heald Lane.

More than 50 booths will be set up on the lawn and in the auditorium. Event set-up begins at 6:30 a.m. Refreshments will be available.

Space rental is $25, and people can register by calling (760) 728-1671 or stopping by the community center to choose a booth space. Vendors must preregister and obtain a resale permit number. Those numbers are available by calling (800) 400-7115 or visiting www.boe.ca.gov.

Garden club prepares for show

FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Garden Club will present its 75th annual standard flower show "Diamond Jubilee" from 2 to 6 p.m. April 29 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 30 at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane. Admission is free. The competition is open to any amateur gardener or designer. Exhibitors need not be members of a garden club.

In the Horticulture Division any cut specimen, container plant, fruit, nut or vegetable is eligible for entry as long as it is fresh, clean, pest free and grown by exhibitor. CROP Walk set for April 2

FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook CROP Walk for Hunger will take place beginning at 1:30 p.m. April 2 at the Fallbrook Food Pantry at 1042 S. Mission Road.

According to event coordinator the Rev. Phil Tukua from Christ the King Church, last year's Fallbrook walk raised $76,150, placing Fallbrook 14th in the nation and first in the western United States.

Of the money raised, nearly $19,038 or 25 percent went to the food pantry, and San Diego matched $16,000. The remainder went to combat hunger worldwide.

Each year about 2,000 communities take part in CROP walks. Last year, overall, more than $4 million went to local agencies, and funds raised provided relief in more than 80 countries. In the last 20 years, CROP walkers raised $264 million.

VC Optimists to offer scholarships

VALLEY CENTER -- The Valley Center Optimists will award two $1,500 scholarships in the form of grants to graduates of Valley Center High School who have maintained a 2.5 grade point average and plan to take an eligible vocational/technical course above high school level.

An eligible program is comparable to those in federal vocational legislation and is a two-year or less program culminating in a terminal associate degree, diploma or certificate less than a bachelor's degree. Students planning to attend a four-year college are not eligible.

Scholarships also will be based on completion of an application form and an oral interview by a committee. Recipients must be U.S. citizens or have applied for citizenship and must start their first college year in the fall. Relatives of foundation or club board members are not eligible. Grants will be issued to one male and one female.

Bryce Canyon trip on tap for seniors

ESCONDIDO -- A four-day trip to Bryce Canyon and Mesquite, Nev., will be offered from April 18 through 21 by the Joslyn Senior Center Travel Office, 210 Park Ave.

Students invited to enter essay contest

NORTH COUNTY -- Students are invited to enter an essay contest sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Escondido, with the topic "Balancing Personal Privacy and Public Safety." The group will award three scholarships of $200 each to the winning students.

Essays should be 300 words in length. Graduating seniors from Escondido High School are eligible to enter the contest, as well as students enrolled at Palomar College and Cal State San Marcos.

Spring break trips planned

Entries for art exhibit sought

Sailing class offered

Blood drive set for March 24

POWAY -- Geico, 14111 Danielson St., will host a San Diego Blood Bank blood drive from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 24. The bloodmobile will be in the parking lot.

All donors at this drive will receive a limited-edition San Diego Blood Bank T-shirt and other gifts. They also will receive a medical history review and mini physical, which includes blood pressure, pulse and temperature checks.

Youth Track & Field Meet set

YANA program reaches out to homebound

POWAY -- The Poway Sheriff's Station and its Senior Volunteer Patrol offer the You Are Not Alone (YANA) outreach program for elderly or disabled individuals who are homebound.

Volunteers make phone calls or visits to YANA clients on a regular basis depending on the client's wishes. Volunteers check to make sure that the clients are being cared for or are caring for themselves properly. Any concerns are documented and quickly follow up on.

SAN MARCOS -- The city's Community Services Department will sponsor a free Discover San Marcos hike from 9 a.m. to noon April 1. Participants can explore the future and existing trails of Old Creek Ranch and the connections to San Elijo Hills, Carlsbad, Encinitas and county areas. The hike is 4 to 6 miles in length and is of moderate difficulty. It will be divided into moderate and fast groups.

Meet at the corner of Diamond Street and Melrose Drive. Take San Marcos Boulevard to Rancho Santa Fe Road south. Turn left on Melrose Drive, then right onto Diamond Street. Park along the sides of Diamond Street.

Reservations are not required; sign in at the meeting location. Minors must be with an adult. Participants should bring water and trail snacks and wear sturdy walking shoes.

San Marcos offers community garden

SAN MARCOS -- The city hosts a community garden at 1263 Fulton Road. The garden's 15-by-20-foot plots are available to San Marcos residents ages 18 and older for an annual fee of $20 per plot. There is also a one-time initial assessment of $20 for new gardeners to help offset operational expenses.

Ten of the 30 garden plots are available. The garden is designed for personal and family gardening; no commercial gardening is allowed. All gardeners are expected to maintain the appearance of their plot and abide by a set of regulations. Inactive plots will be relinquished to gardeners on a waiting list.

To learn more about the rules of use, potential gardeners are encouraged to visit the site and speak to the on-site resident.

Body, Mind & Spirit Expo on tap

SAN DIEGO -- The Body, Mind & Spirit Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 25 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 26 at the Scottish Rite Center, 1895 Camino del Rio South.

The event will feature 80 holistic exhibitors, 60 free lectures, a shopping bazaar and more. There also will be a question-and-answer session with Morgan Spurlock, creator and star of the award-winning documentary "Super Size Me," at 2 p.m. March 26.

Reverend to speak on 'Power Transformation'

History of the harmonica is topic

Tri-City Computer Club to discuss identity theft

North County club holds annual ball

FALLBROOK -- The Boys & Girls Club of North County will hold its annual Auction and Hollywood Glamour Ball April 28 at Pala Mesa Resort.

This "Making a Difference" event is the highlight of the club's fundraising program and benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of North County by providing funds to continue programs and activities serving nearly 2,500 children and their families in the communities of Fallbrook, Bonsall and Pala.
