North San Diego County School News Briefs: Fundraiser to offset Eveland medical expenses

Scott Eveland, a senior at Mission Hills High, was injured and collapsed during a Sept. 14 game. He remains comatose and in critical condition at Palomar Medical Center. Organizers of the fundraiser say proceeds from the event will go directly to Scott's family to help defray his medical bills.

The Scott Eveland Golf Tournament will begin, shotgun style, at noon; followed by cocktails and a silent auction at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. and a live auction at 7:15 p.m. One round of golf will include dinner at $125 each. Individual dinner tickets are available at $50 each. Sponsorships of a hole are available at $1,000 each, and include two rounds of golf, two dinner tickets and signage at the hole.

Auction items also are needed in the form of gift certificates, tickets and merchandise. Donors will be recognized in the event program.

Proper attire at the tournament is required. In keeping with the private club's standards, men's shirts must have collars and sleeves, and women's shirts must have either collars or sleeves. No denim, short shorts, cutoffs, running shorts, tennis-length skirts, T-shirts, tank tops or sweatshirts should be worn.

Trade Tech High plans Open House

VISTA - North County Trade Tech High School, a construction-oriented public charter school opening in fall 2008 in Vista, will host a workshop and open house for parents and students from throughout North County from 5 to 8 p.m. October 16 at the Gloria E. McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive.

Students interested in entering the ninth grade in 2008 are encouraged to attend the open house, where they will be able to experience first-hand the project-based learning model that Trade Tech is built upon. Students will learn business principles by participating in a pen manufacturing business, where they will design their own pen using a lathe, learn about conservation and the eco-system by constructing an owl house, be introduced to blueprint reading, and experience first-hand the math and geometry components of construction as they are introduced to estimation principles at the Estimator's Learning Lab. Students and parents will be able to view a multi-media presentation on Project Foundry, a Web-based student portfolio management tool, as well as interact with industry partners and teachers to learn more about the great career pathway opportunities available in the construction trades.

North County Trade Tech High School will provide project-based instruction in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry and construction management, all consistent with modern green building design, integrated with academic rigor. Trade Tech will accept 100 ninth-grade students through a publicly-held lottery, growing to 400 students across grades 9 to 12 by 2011. Students also will focus on leadership development, civic engagement, on-the-job training opportunities and internships, and community service. Trade Tech graduates can meet all California State University and University of California eligibility requirements, while also being prepared for an accelerated apprenticeship in the trade of their choice.

Trade Tech, a nonprofit, will be tuition-free. It has received financial support through the Girard Foundation; EdVisions, a program through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and industry groups including the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) among others.

NASA joins science curriculum provider

NORTH COUNTY - The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has joined the Mad Science Group to form a partnership that has launched the Academy of Future Space Explorers. With a chapter in San Diego, the Mad Science Group offers science curriculum that encourages children to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Mad Science programs have been integrated into various enrichment activities used by schools, after-school programs, summer camps and community events.

The Academy of Future Space Explorers will encourage children's curiosity about Earth, the moon, Mars and beyond through creative hands-on experiments and engaging demonstrations. Participants will explore compelling topics including: Planets and Moons, Atmosphere and Beyond, Space Phenomena, Sun and Stars, Rocket Science, Space Travel, Space Technology and Living in Space.

4-H information meetings planned

BONSALL - Informational meetings about the Bonsall 4-H Club will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 and Nov. 21 at the Bonsall Community Center, 31555 Old River Road.

Soroptimists seek Violet Richardson nominees

FALLBROOK - Soroptimist International of Fallbrook sponsors the Violet Richardson award annually and is seeking nominees of young women between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteer in their communities or schools. The award recognizes young women who make the world a better place through their volunteer efforts.

A cash grant of $250 will be awarded, in honor of the winner, to their volunteer organization.

Two more tri-tip dinners remain this year

FALLBROOK - The Fallbrook High School Future Farmers of America will serve its famous tri-tip dinners, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, before the remaining home football games this year.

Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the agriculture department, at the east end of the football field. Each meal includes tri-tip, beans, salad, dinner roll and a drink. Cost is $8. Legoland Community Day planned

CARLSBAD - Carlsbad residents can celebrate their community and enjoy a reduced-price day at Legoland California's Community Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 13. Tickets cost $20. Proceeds benefit the Kids Are Worth A Million program of the Carlsbad Educational Foundation, which supports educational programs in the Carlsbad Unified School District.

Kids Are Worth a Million has been supported by the foundation since 1983. To date, the foundation has contributed more than $3 million dollars in direct school grants to support technology, reading and libraries, science and the arts.

Junk in the Trunk Sale to be held

RBV band, pageantry groups to perform

Rancho Buena Vista High School's band and pageantry groups will perform their show titled "Inspire" at 7:15 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Poway Invitational Field Tournament at Poway High School. The show will include a color-changing background, solos and a dramatic drum climax.

Concert on the Green set

ENCINITAS - The Corvettes will perform during the upcoming Concert on the Green, from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at The Grauer School, 1500 S. El Camino Real. The public is welcome to the event, which will feature entertainment and refreshments including grilled hot dogs, chips, soda and ice-cream floats at discount prices. Tickets cost $10. Rhodes School student enters national challenge

ENCINITAS - Alyssa Chan, an Encinitas resident and student at The Rhodes School, is one of 40 national finalists and five students in California taking part in the 2007 Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge.

From Oct. 21 to 24, finalists and their families will meet in Washington, D.C., where the students will take part in a series of team-based, interactive scientific challenges focused on this year's environmental theme, "Operation Green." Finalists will compete for more than $100,000 worth of scholarships and special prizes, as well as the title of America's Top Young Scientist of the Year.

The finalists were selected from the 75,000 middle school students who entered science fairs nationwide. That pool was narrowed down in August to 400 semifinalists representing 44 states.

This year's green-themed competition will focus on sustainability and preservation, with students investigating climate change, global warming and eco-friendly initiatives such as recycling and green building design.

Since its inception in 1999, nearly 16,000 students have entered the challenge. Winners have received approximately $700,000 in scholarship awards and federal government recognition, and have participated in science-related trips that have taken them around the world.

El Camino student earns honor

OCEANSIDE - Brittany Bennett, an Oceanside resident and senior at El Camino High School, recently became a finalist in the 2008 National Achievement Scholarship Program. She is one of 1,600 black American seniors to earn the distinction because of their scholastic achievements. They will continue in the competition for about 800 scholarships worth more than $2.5 million, to be awarded next spring. The program, conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Program, is a privately financed academic competition that operates without government assistance. It was initiated in 1964 to recognize promising black students throughout the nation and provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants.

Local students earn scout awards

NORTH COUNTY - Local students and members of Cardiff and Encinitas Scout Pack 797 recently competed in their annual bike rodeo. Contests included drag racing, figure eight, an obstacle course and paper boy throw. Winners were Taj Goldsmith, first place, Capri Elementary School; Kyra Bennowitz, second place, Capri Elementary; Jacob Lin, third place, Capri Elementary; and Connor Bissonnette, fourth place, Cardiff Elementary.

Master's degree earned

Diane Lach of Vista recently earned a master's degree from Central Michigan University.

Math tutoring offered

TPHS alumna earns sports award

Caitlin Tomaska, a 2005 graduate of Torrey Pines High School and student at Connecticut College, recently was named Volleyball Player of the Week by the New England Small College Athletic Conference. She and her team, the undefeated Camels, posted a perfect 4-0 week that included a three-match sweep.

OHS Foundation members welcome

OCEANSIDE - The Oceanside High School Foundation welcomes new members. Membership dues fund reunions, activities, programs, classroom needs and capital improvements to the school.

All members receive the group's quarterly newsletter. Annual dues are: $5 for current students and $25 or more for regular members, who receive a certificate of membership; $50 or more for supporting members, who also receive an Oceanside High decal; $100 of more for silver members, who also receive an OHS lanyard; $250 or more for gold members, who also receive an OHS pen; and $1,000 or more for life members, who also receive a letterman's "O", engraved plate with name, the words "life member" and the year of donation.

Rotary Club Fun Run planned

RANCHO PENASQUITOS - The San Diego North Rotary Club will hold its annual Fun Run for third- through eighth-graders at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at Mt. Carmel High School. The event has received financial assistance for several years from the Warren-Nealy Foundation. This year, Supervisor Pam Slater-Price also will sponsor the run. SAN MARCOS - A wrestling match designed for the whole family is planned for 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at San Marcos Middle School, 650 W. Mission Road. The event, put on by We Saw Pro Wrestling, is a benefit for the school's Parent Teacher Organization. Admission is $5, children younger than 3 are free. Doors will open at 5 p.m. for food and beverages.

College Fair slated

ESCONDIDO - The Escondido Union and Valley Center-Pauma high school districts will present a College Fair from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 22 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 N. Escondido Blvd. Students from eighth through 12th grade and their parents are invited to the event, where colleges and universities from across the country will be represented. Counselors will be available to answer admissions questions and answer questions about their schools. Information about the SAT, ACT and NCAA exams also will be available.
