Dr. Bradley Schnierow will present "Sleep Disorders and Chronic Pain," discussing sleep disorders and pain from post polio syndrome, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. Schnierow is a specialist who is board certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine, as well as the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Firefighter boot drive nets $200,000
SAN DIEGO - The eighth annual "Give Burns the Boot" firefighter boot drive took place May 9. At various intersections around the county, firefighters held out their boots while passing motorists helped fill them with donations.
In one day, firefighters representing nearly 30 fire departments raised more than $200,000 for the work of the Burn Institute, which includes fire and burn prevention programs and burn survivor programs, such as Camp Beyond the Scars for burn-injured children.
The top fire department in North County and winner of the traveling bronze boot drive trophy was the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District. The winner of the Bronze Fire Chief 0-1 Trophy went to Rancho Santa Fe Fire Chief Nick Pavone for raising the most money in a chief's boot.
Fallbrook Democrats to hear speaker
FALLBROOK - Chalmers Johnson, distinguished scholar, best-selling author and expert on U.S. foreign policy, will address a special event June 2 hosted as a community service by the Fallbrook Democratic Club. It will be followed by a Q&A session and book signing of his just released best-seller "Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic," in which he argues that U.S. military and economic overreach may actually lead to the nation's collapse as a constitutional republic.
It is his third in a trilogy that includes "Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire." winner of the 2001 American Book Award of the Before Columbus Foundation; and "The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic."
Johnson, a former naval officer, is a retired professor of International Relations and current Professor Emeritus at the University of California at San Diego. He is a scholar in the field of Asian Studies. He is founder and president of the Japan Policy Research Institute and author of more than 17 books. He has written for many publications including the Los Angeles Times, Harper's Magazine and The Nation. He has been awarded fellowships from the Ford Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation and is an elected Fellow the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
