Letter Carriers' Food Drive set

FALLBROOK - The Fallbrook Food Pantry is encouraging community residents to take part in the annual Letter Carriers Food Drive by setting out non-perishable food items next to their mailboxes May 12.

Last year the Fallbrook Food Pantry collected approximately 4 to 5 tons of food as a result of this food drive.

Former Fallbrook resident honored

FALLBROOK - Former Fallbrook resident Melinda Blackman recently was awarded with the Carol Barnes Excellence in Teaching Award for 2006-07 from Cal State University Fullerton. Blackman is an associate professor of psychology. She was a graduate and valedictorian of the class of 1987 of Fallbrook High School.

Blackman said she loves her job and has wanted to teach ever since she was in fourth grade, adding her parents, Dave and Marcia Carroll, were her mentors. Both of them were teachers. Her father taught high school agricultural science in the Escondido High School District and her mother taught kindergarten in the Fallbrook Elementary School District.

Blackman holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Stanford University and a master's degree and doctorate in social /personality psychology from UC Riverside, and was hired to teach at CSU Fresno as a part-time lecturer in 1996. Two years later she became an assistant professor and, in 2003, was promoted to associate professor.

Besides teaching, Blackman, who lives in Newport Beach with her husband and two children, has written two teaching manuals - the 2006 "GradeAid" and a manual to accompany Elliot Aronson's "Social Psychology."

She also serves as the graduate coordinator and an undergraduate adviser in the psychology department.

While on sabbatical this semester, she wrote a book about the psychology of sticking to a diet. Publishers are reviewing it for publication.

Fallbrook Art Association to meet

FALLBROOK - The Fallbrook Art Association's May general meeting will feature award-winning photographer Jon Harwood. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 14, at the Hilltop Center, 331 E. Elder St. Now that juried art shows are accepting digital photographs in the place of the traditional slide, it is necessary for artists at all levels to be able to submit work in a digital form. The techniques of making photographs with computers can be learned with a modest effort. In his presentation, entitled "Going Digital," Harwood will share methods of creating a good quality digital photograph with simple equipment, demonstrating how to produce good quality pictures with low-end digital cameras, common computers and simple shooting setups.

Harwood studied photography at Santa Ana College and Cal State Fullerton. During the last three years, he has returned to active photography, employing the traditional black-and-white photographic processes in his art-oriented work. Subjects come from the natural and urban landscape in the Fallbrook area and often feature the interaction of the land, people and agriculture. Nineteenth-century photographers and processes, as well as modern monochrome photographers, influence him. He teaches classes in basic and intermediate digital photography at the Art Campus of Fallbrook.

Refreshments will be served following the meeting, which is open to the public at no charge. Membership applications are available at all meetings. For more information about membership, call Shirley Williams at (760) 451-8664.
