North San Diego County Community News Briefs: Pro bull riding event set at fairgrounds

DEL MAR - The Professional Bull Riders will come to the Del Mar Fairgrounds Arena on July 28 and 29 for the Del Mar Invitational, an Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tour event. Gates will open at 7 p.m. and the event will begin at 8.

Tickets cost $25 for reserved grandstand seats and $65 for VIP box seating. Tickets can be ordered by calling Ticketmaster at (619) 220-TIXS or online at http://www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets also are available at the Del Mar Fairgrounds box office.

Enjoy a pre-show barbecue and meet the riders at 7 p.m. each night. A Santa Maria-style barbecue dinner from Hunter Steakhouse will be available. Meal prices range from $14 to $16.

PFLAG group to meet July 22

CARLSBAD - Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, or PFLAG, a parent-led support and information organization, will meet at 2 p.m. July 22 at the Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2020 Chestnut Ave.

PFLAG invites anyone having difficulties understanding gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender issues to attend the meeting, especially when family relationships are disrupted. Family members, as well as GLBT people, are invited to join in discussions of mutual support.

Genealogical Society to meet

CARLSBAD - The North San Diego County Genealogical Society will meet at 10:30 a.m. July 24 in the Carlsbad City Council Chambers, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive.

Joel Weintraub, Ph.D., professor at Cal State Fullerton and volunteer with the National Archives in Laguna Niguel, will speak on "Searching the U.S. Census by Geographical Means or When Name Indexes Fail." Weintraub has assisted well-known computer genealogist Steve Morse in producing a large number of online census searching utilities for the "Morse One Step" Web site.

Macintosh computer group to meet

OCEANSIDE - The Oceanside Macintosh User Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. July 25 at Oceana Clubhouse Auditorium, 550 Vista Bella.

Member Elizabeth DeBoer will present "Backup, Share and Expand Your Life With Dot Mac." She will discuss how the Apple product Dot Mac (.Mac) can help users easily back up their photos, music and files, as well as share their pictures, movies, podcasts, blogs, Web sites and more.

The group provides a forum for Macintosh computer users of all levels to share knowledge and experience. Visitors are welcome.

Mijares is a psychologist and lead author of "The Root of All Evil: An Exposition of Prejudice, Fundamentalism and Gender Imbalance."

Free bone marrow testing offered

SAN DIEGO - In honor of an 11-year-old leukemia patient's national campaign to register 5,000 donors nationwide, the San Diego Blood Bank is offering free bone marrow testing at all of its donor centers through July 31.

Patrick Pedraja of Tampa Bay, Fla., has launched a national campaign called "Driving for Donors" to convince people to register with the National Marrow Donor Program. Those who join the registry due to Patrick's efforts are encouraged to give his name when they are tested so that they can be counted in the 5,000 donor goal.

Motorcycle run to benefit dogs in need

NORTH COUNTY - Labrador Harbor will host the first Kruise for K-9s motorcycle run to raise funds for Labrador retrievers in need Aug. 25. Motorcyclists will blaze a trail from Oceanside to the Menghini Winery in Julian.

Registration fee is $25 per person, which includes an event T-shirt and lunch at the winery. Nonriders can assist Labrador Harbor by sponsoring a rider, participating in prize drawings or making a donation to the cause. All proceeds from the event will benefit families who have requested assistance through Labrador Harbor.

Disabled businesswomen to network

SAN MARCOS - The Professional Business Women's Resource Network will hold its inaugural meeting from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. July 28. The organization will strive to foster a greater sense of professionalism and networking among members, as well as among the wider community of disabled women.

The networking group is part of the Challenged Women's Support Initiative, an organization of Sharp HealthCare, that offers programs and services for disabled women in San Diego County.

The first meeting will be hosted by Tami Ridley, an attorney, entrepreneur, real estate investor, master gardener and quadriplegic, at the restaurant she owns and operates, Friars Folly Wine Cellar in Old Restaurant Row, 1032 W. San Marcos Blvd.

Project Linus thank-you party on tap

TEMECULA - Volunteers who make blankets and quilts through local Project Linus chapters and the North County Coastal Club of Altrusa International are invited to a thank-you party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 4 at Temecula Valley Sewing Center, 28780 Old Town Front Street, Suite D-3.

The event will include refreshments, label sewing, door prizes and the chance to meet the people who expedite the distribution of the handmade blankets and quilts to hospitals, foster care facilities, shelters, churches and other groups.
