SAN DIEGO - Pete Earley, the author of multiple nonfiction books and novels and a former reporter for The Washington Post, will speak at this year's luncheon of the Mental Health Committee of Jewish Family Service of San Diego.

His newest book, "Crazy: A Father's Search Through America's Mental Health Madness," discusses his journey as a father throughout his son's diagnosis, arrest and treatment.

Church information meeting planned

Artists demonstration planned

FALLBROOK - The artists of the Word Play exhibit, now in the Etcetera section of the Brandon Gallery, will demonstrate their work from noon to 2 p.m. April 28 on the sidewalk and inside the gallery. Viviana Lombrozo will demonstrate stamping. Risa Gettler and Kathy Morgan will show word bleaching on dark paper. Susan Richardson will do journaling and bookmaking; and Carrie Repking will work with collage incorporating words.

The Word Play exhibit presents works that fuse images and words in celebration of National Poetry Month and Fallbrook's Community Read. The show has been extended through May 31.

Garden show plans being finalized

FALLBROOK - The final touches are being put on the Fallbrook Garden Club's 76th annual standard flower show which is taking place from 2 to 6 p.m. April 28 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 29 at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane. The show, open to the public, will feature horticulture, floral designs, education and youth exhibits. Admission is free. In addition, the Market Place will offer plants, crafts and garden art for sale, and there will be live music and opportunity drawings throughout the weekend.

Historical society plans annual luncheon

FALLBROOK - The Fallbrook Historical Society will hold its annual luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 at the Grand Tradition. Everyone is welcome. The program will include the election of board members for the coming year and the announcement of the winner of the inaugural Junior Historical award. In addition, the society will honor Dode Martin with the Pioneer of the Year Award and recognizing Bev and Earl McDougal with the Vintage Award for service to the community. Painting by local artist earns honor

FALLBROOK - "Three Hills," a painting by Fallbrook artist Marlene Sheridan, has been selected by John Salminen into the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies 32nd Annual Exhibition, "SUMMER OF WATERCOLOR," hosted by The Colorado Society, Denver, Colorado, and the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, Arvada, Colorado.

The painting is to be part of the 148 paintings in the WFWS-32 Exhibition. The exhibition opens to the public with an artist opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. June 1 at the Arvada Center and closes Nov. 11.

Fallbrook Women's Connection brunch scheduled

FALLBROOK - Fallbrook Women's Connection brunch will take place from 10 a.m. to noon May 18 at the Grand Tradition at 1602 S. Mission Road. Entertainment will be Ballet Folklorico Esperanza, featuring children of the Ballet performing Mexican traditional dances in native costumes.

'Rotary at Work Day' set for April 28

ESCONDIDO - The city has declared April 28 as "Rotary at Work Day." The three Rotary Clubs in Escondido have a history of more than 25 years of providing service to the community and its residents.

The groups often work together on projects that benefit those in need. Rotarians are often joined by family members, neighbors, students from San Pasqual Academy and youths from the Rotarian Interact club.

Projects scheduled for April 28 include assembling 43 new park benches; and clearing brush, painting and making repairs and improvements at Kit Carson Park and Dixon Lake.

Student artwork sought for exhibit

ESCONDIDO - The Escondido Art Association and Artists Gallery invites students ages 8 through 18 to submit artwork for the "Kids' Kaleidoscope Art Exhibit" sponsored by the city of Escondido. There is no entry fee for qualified entrants.

One entry per student. Artwork must be properly framed and ready to hang, not to exceed 24-by-36-inches in size. Drop artwork off between 2 and 6 p.m. April 30 at the gallery, 121 W. Grand Ave.

Local encaustic artist will be featured

ESCONDIDO - The Escondido Arts Partnership will feature work by Josie Rodriguez of San Diego during May at the Escondido Municipal Gallery Expressions Space. Rodriguez is known for her encaustic and mixed media collage. Encaustic is a 2,000-year-old process using wax and heat, as well as colored pigments. The effect has been described as transparent, luminous and mysterious.

Peter Pupping Quartet to perform

ESCONDIDO - Escondido Public Library's First Thursday Concert series will feature the Peter Pupping Quartet at 7 p.m. May 3 in the library's Turrentine Room, 239 S. Kalmia St.

The quartet, featuring Peter Pupping and William Wilson on guitar, Jeff Basile on upright bass and Roy Gonzales on percussion, will perform Latin jazz standards, tangos and more.

Better Breathers Club to meet

Quilting class for adults offered

ESCONDIDO - The Escondido Adult School will offer a "Jacob's Ladder Quilt" class from 9 a.m. to noon or 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, May 15 through June 12, at 463 Midway Drive, Room 1 (behind the fire station). This is a Level 2 class, some quilting experience is recommended. Students can learn to make this quilt using strip piecing, speed cutting and speed sewing techniques.

Casino night to benefit Rolling Hills School

RANCHO PENASQUITOS - The Rolling Hills Elementary School Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raises money to restore music, art and gym teachers at Rolling Hills Elementary School, will host is fourth annual Casino Night and Auction from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. May 12 at the Doubletree Golf Resort, 14455 Penasquitos Drive.

Auction items will include Hawaii vacations, hotel stays, concert tickets, karate lessons, artwork by nationally recognized artists and Rolling Hills students, quilts and gift baskets. Donations of additional auction items are needed.

Tax-deductible tickets are $40 to $45 in advance or $50 at the door, which includes a buffet dinner and casino-style gaming where nobody loses. Cost to sponsor a table of 10 is $400.

The event is for adults only. A pizza and pajamas party will be provided for kids ages 3 to 13 at Rolling Hills Elementary School. Cost of $25 per child includes dinner, a movie and snacks.

Lifeguard training course offered

SAN MARCOS - The city will offer a lifeguard training course for ages 15 and older April 28 through May 15 at the Woodland Park Pool. Classes will meet from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m Saturdays; and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 6.

All participants who successfully complete the course will be eligible to apply for a summer lifeguarding position at one of the two city pools. Participants must first pass a swim test before beginning the course.

SAN MARCOS - The city and the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos will present the first Day of Discovery, a free community festival for all ages, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 28 at Walnut Grove Park, corner of Olive Street and Sycamore Drive.

Attendees can enjoy free entertainment, fun, games, prizes and healthy food. Interactive displays and activities will include health services and screenings, fitness demonstrations, child and family resources, senior resources, a kids' fun zone and hikes. Church to hold sale, open house

SAN MARCOS - Grace Episcopal Church will hold a spring rummage sale and open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 28 at 1020 Rose Ranch Road.

The event will include gently-used household items for sale, tours of the 120-year-old church building, coffee and doughnuts. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Grace Vacation Bible School Community Outreach Program.

School to host Spring Carnival

SAN MARCOS - Paloma Elementary School will hold its third annual Spring Carnival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 28 on campus, 660 Camino Magnifico.

The event will feature games and prizes, pony rides, a balloon artist, face painting, inflatable slides, karaoke, entertainment, food and a cake walk. The San Marcos Sheriff Station and Fire Department will be on hand to show youngsters their vehicles and talk about safety.

Carwash to benefit SMMS Band Boosters

SAN MARCOS - San Marcos Middle School Band Boosters will hold a carwash fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 29 at San Marcos Gas on Mission Road. Cost is $5 per car, with all proceeds going to the booster club.

'Tom Sawyer' auditions planned

SAN MARCOS - Theatre West invites youths ages 7 to 18 to audition for "Tom Sawyer," a musical production, from 5 to 8 p.m. April 30 at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive.

Auditioners should come prepared to sing a one-minute sample of a song and bring a recent photo and $2 for the audition fee. Beginners, as well as advanced performers, are welcome.

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, June 1 through 10.

VFW hosts Sunday breakfasts

SAN MARCOS - Veterans of Foreign Wars San Marcos Memorial Post 3795 and its Ladies' and Men's auxiliaries serve breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon Sundays at the post, 212 W. Mission Road. Donation is $5 for adults; $3 for children ages 12 and younger.

Club to host bridge luncheon

RANCHO BERNARDO - The Welcome Club of San Diego North County will hold its First-Tuesday Bridge Luncheon on May 1 at the Bernardo Heights Country Club, 16066 Bernardo Heights Parkway.

Elfin Forest hike set for May 5

ESCONDIDO - The city of San Marcos' Community Services Department will sponsor a free hike from 9 a.m. to noon May 5 at the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve.

The moderate to difficult hike with a 600-foot elevation change will explore the "way-up" trail to overlook the Olivenhain Reservoir. Participants can choose either a three- or seven-mile roundtrip route. For information about the reserve, go to http://www.olivenhain.com/parks.html.

From Highway 78, exit at Nordahl Road and go south. Nordahl becomes Citracado Parkway. Turn right on Country Club Lane then right on Harmony Grove for about a mile. The reserve entrance is on the left. Park in the upper lot; carpooling is recommended as parking is limited.

Reservations are not required. Sign-in will begin at 8:30 a.m at the meeting location. Minors must be with an adult. Participants should bring water and trail snacks. Walking shoes are recommended. Dogs must be on a six-foot leash.

TERI to hold annual golf tournament

LA JOLLA - TERI (Training, Education and Research Institute), a nonprofit corporation that offers a wide range of services and programs for individuals with developmental and learning disabilities and their families, will hold its 18th annual Dirce Schwarz Memorial Golf Tournament on May 3 at the Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Sheriff Bill Kolender, a longtime TERI supporter, is the honorary chairman of the event, which will include a putting contest, lunch, evening cocktails, dinner, auction and awards ceremony.

Cost is $375 per golfer or $1,400 per foursome. Proceeds will to toward building TERI's new campus, the Center for Research and Life Planning.

Leadership Summit to be held

Journalist Roundtable set for May 3
