Gallery announces featured artists

ENCINITAS -- Yanina Cambareri, Jackie Tyree, Julie Sauer and Tom Shannon will be the featured artists at the Off Track Gallery for July and August. Town history walk offered

ENCINITAS -- The Encinitas Historical Society will host a free downtown city walk at 10:30 a.m. July 11. Meet at the 1883 Schoolhouse, F and 4th streets. This is a leisure walk covering 13 blocks. Call 760-753-5726.

Weekend bazaar brings 'Dog Day Afternoon'

ENCINITAS -- The spay/neuter SNAP program will show off its mobile "Neuter Scooter," host tours and hand out information on low-cost neutering and education from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 11 at the Seaside Bazaar. The bazaar is one block south of Encinitas Boulevard on Coast Highway 101 next to the La Paloma Theater. Mayor Maggie Houlihann will speak at 1 p.m. Dogs will be available for adoption. Jamba Juice's mobile unit will offer juices and smoothies, with the proceeds to benefit SNAP. The open-air, European-style bazaar offers free space to qualified, licensed and insured nonprofit organizations benefiting animals. Call 760-753-6347.

Concert to benefit children

SAN MARCOS -- Brookdale Place will have a piano concert to benefit the Invisible Children of Uganda from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. July 11 at 1590 W. San Marcos Blvd. Joseph Kolker, a 16-year-old high school student and piano prodigy, will perform. Joseph has adopted the Invisible Children for his high school project and hopes to raise $1,000 from this performance. The Invisible Children have been abducted, their parents have been killed and they have been converted to soldiers. Donations of $10 are requested. Networking group to meet

SAN MARCOS -- The North County Women in Networking will hold a buffet luncheon meeting at 11 a.m. July 8 at Lake San Marcos Country Club, 1750 San Pablo Drive. Video game design, web design camps slated

SAN MARCOS -- The city of San Marcos is offering two summer camp programs for children 8 to 14 from July 6-10 at the community center, 3 Civic Center Drive. Gallery 204 to celebrate anniversary

VISTA -- The Vista Art Foundation will hold a reception to celebrate its anniversary from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 10 at the gallery, 204 Main St. Each of the 200-plus members of the foundation will have an opportunity to display their art under the theme "We are One." The show will run through July. Guests are invited to meet the artists while enjoying food, refreshments and music. Judging the show and awarding blue ribbons for each medium will be Robert Freeman, who will offer workshops on marketing, basic drawing, block printing and critiquing, Freeman will share a "Dinner with the Artist" for those who have attended all four workshops. Library holding annual auction

CARLSBAD -- The Friends of the Carlsbad City Library will hold its annual silent auction from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 11 and 1 to 3 p.m. July 12 with bidding ending at 3 p.m. The auction will take place in the Gowland Meeting Room at the Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Lane. Coffee table books, new and vintage children's materials, antiquarian titles, sets, cookbooks and more will be up for auction. 5K run at regional park

OCEANSIDE -- The annual Guajome Lakes 5K and Kids Fun Run kicks off July 11 at Guajome Regional Park, 3000 Guajome Lake Road. The course features a hardpacked dirt trail run around the wooded Guajome Lake and open areas. The men's race begins at 8 a.m. The women's race and a run/walk begin at 8:30. Prizes will be awarded. Artisan fair returns with flair

OCEANSIDE -- The annual Old Mission Montessori School will host its annual "Christmas in July" Artisan Fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 11 and 12. The two-day event will include more than 100 artisans, a fun zone for kids, a farmers market, food booths, entertainment and a rummage sale. An auction will be held at 2 p.m. July 12. Retirement community to hold independence day celebration

ESCONDIDO -- The Springs of Escondido will host an Independence Day celebration at noon July 4 at 1261 E. Washington Ave. Orange Glen High School ROTC flag bearer cadets will open the event, which will feature barbecue ribs and hot dogs. Entertainment will be by the Musicstation Enterprise. Hikes at Daley Ranch offered

ESCONDIDO -- Daley Ranch is offering hikes that begin at the entrance at 3024 La Honda Drive, unless otherwise noted. A shuttle runs on Sundays with handicap accessibility. Bring water, sun hat, sunscreen, and proper hiking boots or treaded footwear. Drinking water is no longer available on Daley Ranch. A complete hike schedule is available at escondido.org. Call 760-839-4680. Here are a few upcoming hikes:

- 6 a.m. July 10: Mystery Walk: Route will be determined by the group's make-upp, but expect a fast-paced, strenuous walk of about 7 miles. There will be map reading, so bring your glasses.

- 9 a.m. July 12: Daley Ranch Scenery: The occasionally strenuous 4-mile hike will explore the ranch's diverse plant population and expansive views. Meet at the Cougar Pass Trailhead at the Cougar Pass parking area. From Interstate 15, take the El Norte Parkway exit in Escondido east about a half mile to Broadway. Take Broadway north 4 miles to Cougar Pass, a dirt road, turn right and drive one mile. Park in the asphalt lot on the left.

- 7:30 a.m. July 18: Early Birds, Bugs, N' Botany: This will be a moderate hike of about 3.5 miles, lasting 2 1/2 -3 hours. The hike will include Ranch House Road, Sage, Diamondback and Creek Crossing Trails. This hike is never canceled by rain; dogs must be leashed at all times.

- 8 a.m. July 18: Rattlers and Common Plants: This will be a 3.5-mile, moderately strenuous hike along the Boulder Loop and Rock Ridge trails, with the option of going further if the weather cooperates. Discussions will focus mostly on how to identify rattlesnakes, their habitats, and plants seen along the trails.

- 8 a.m. July 25: Rewarding Workout: A sometimes strenuous, but always interesting 10-mile hike that will include some of the best hills on the ranch. Expect to be on the trails for about 4.5 hours, including time for a snack break. Ride the shuttle to the Ranch House.

Escondido man celebrates 100th birthday

ESCONDIDO -- Leopold Boucher turned 100 on July 2. His family will celebrate his birthday on July 5. Boucher was born in Portsmouth, N.H. and is the oldest of five siblings. Boucher was married for 45 years before his wife passed away at 87. Boucher now lives with his daughter and her family.

Press club meeting

RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Press Club of North San Diego County will meet at 10 a.m. July 10 at the Remington Club II, 16926 Hierba Drive. Mayor Don Higginson of Poway and Mayor Pro Tem Dick Daniels of Escondido will speak about issues and future plans of the two cities, including water problems, financial issues, city services and schools.
