Southwest Riverside County Community News Briefs: Elks offering scholarships

The deadline is Thursday to apply for the California-Hawaii Elks Major Project Undergraduate Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities.

The scholarship is available to any student who is a citizen of the United States, resident of California or Hawaii, has a physical impairment, neurological impairment, visual impairment, hearing impairment, and/or speech/language disorder; and has passed the General Educational Development or California High School Proficiency Examination. Applications are available on the Web site www.chea-elks.org.

Also available is the California-Hawaii Elks Vocational Grant for students who plan to pursue a vocational or technical course.

The program is open to any students who require training or retraining to compete in the workplace, despite their age.

Applications are available at www.chea-elks.org/vocationalgrant.html. They are due three months after they are received.

Genealogy topic of meetings

TEMECULA - The Temecula Valley Genealogical Society's Computer Users Group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Friday followed by a meeting of the Legacy User Group at noon.

Group plans peace rally

RIVERSIDE - Riverside Area Peace & Justice Action will hold a peace rally at 6 p.m. Friday, the fourth anniversary of the United States' invasion of Iraq.

The rally, for those wishing to send a message that they want the occupation of Iraq by U.S. military forces to end, will be held at the corner of Iowa and University avenues in Riverside.

Community group plans monthly meeting

SUN CITY - Jay Orr, director of the county's code enforcement department, will speak when the Riverside County United Communities, a group representing unincorporated communities, has its monthly meeting Saturday.

Breakfast is at 8:30 a.m. and the talk begins at 9:30.

Library friends plan book sale

LAKE ELSINORE - Friends of the Lake Elsinore Library will hold a book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

There will be books for children and adults at bargain prices.

The sale will be in the Community Room behind the Lake Elsinore Library, 600 Graham Ave.

Woman's club to hold boutique

SUN CITY - The Menifee Valley Woman's Club will hold a boutique sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Crafts and books will be sold.

The sale will be at Sun City Gardens, 28500 Bradley Ave.

Also, the club's nomination committee will present officers for next year when the club gathers at 1 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, 30200 Carmel Road in Sun City. The time was incorrect in an article March 7.

GOP ladies plan membership breakfast

MURRIETA - Temecula Valley Republican Women Federated will hold its membership breakfast at 10 a.m. March 24 at Bear Creek Country Club. There is no charge to attend.

The speaker will be Nathan Fletcher, who recently completed his service in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves as a counterintelligence/human intelligence specialist.

Elks ladies to hold craft bazaar

WILDOMAR - The Lake Elsinore Elks Ladies Spring Craft Bazaar will run from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Items will include jewelry, cosmetics, crafts, baked items and candles.

Author to address women's club

TEMECULA - Jacqueline Berger, author of "The First Ladies Lady," will speak when the Temecula Valley Woman's Club meets at 10 a.m. March 22.

Berger has combined her passion for history and knowledge on the nation's first ladies with her speaking and seminar abilities.

Friends founder to speak about library

MURRIETA - Carol Kravagna, a founder of the Friends of the Murrieta Library, will speak at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the new facility.

Kravagna began working as a volunteer to bring library services to Murrieta in 1995 as a member of the Riverside County Library Task Force. Working with Dorothy "Dottie" Renon, who died in 1998, Friends of the Murrieta Library was formed with Kravagna as the first president. The group quickly grew to around 40 members, most of whom are still active in the organization.

The new Murrieta Public Library is at Eight Town Square, near Adams and Kalmia streets. It is scheduled to open Saturday.

Italian-American Club plans meal, bake sale

The Italian-American Club of Temecula will host a potluck dinner and bake sale/auction at 6 p.m. March 21. It will be a celebration to St. Joseph.

Women's Connection group to meet

TEMECULA - "Keeping Love Alive" will be the theme when the Temecula Valley Women's Connection gathers for its monthly luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 21 at Pat & Oscar's.

MENIFEE - The Dakota Club will have a pizza party at 1 p.m. March 22.

Exhibit features local photographers

MURRIETA - The works of three local professional photographers are on display at the Gentry Studio. "Personal Photography" showcases the talents of Chip Morton, Jann Gentry and Carl Kravats.

Morton specializes in advertising and fine art photography. Gentry is an award-winning photographer who says her specialty is in photographing people. Kravats specializes in photographing food, products and commercial applications.

Murrieta Valley choirs to perform

MURRIETA - The choirs of Murrieta Valley High School will perform their annual Spring Concert at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Catherine's Catholic Parish.

Tickets cost $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. Priority seating tickets are available online at www.gomvhs.com or they will be available at the door.

There will be a bake sale at intermission. Proceeds will go to the choir program.

Quarter horse event in Temecula

TEMECULA - The SCRCHA Green Oaks Pot of Gold Show, an American Quarter Horse Association-approved special event, will take place Saturday at Tucalota Creek Ranch.

American Quarter Horse shows test horses' ability in dozens of classes. This event is for working cow horse enthusiasts.

Rally against quarry planned for Sunday

TEMECULA - A rally opposing the proposed Liberty Quarry is planned for 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Patricia Birdsall Sports Park.

Participants are asked to wear an orange hat for an aerial photo of the group spelling out the works "No Quarry."

There will also be speakers and music. The rally is sponsored by SOS-Hills and Rainbow Against the Quarry.
