Walk for Human Rights set

OCEANSIDE -- The 20th anniversary San Diego Candlelight Walk For Human Rights, hosted by the North County Chapter of Amnesty International, will take place at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Oceanside Amphitheater and pier. Free. This year's theme, "A Call for International Justice," will let participants be a voice for victims of human rights abuses, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to call on elected officials to support the International Criminal Court. A brief reception and the music of Akaya & Bolga Zohdoomah will be followed by a program of speakers. The featured speaker will be Rebiya Kadeer, the chapter's former "adopted" prisoner of conscience from the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in China, who is now free. Other presenters will be Peter Schey, the founder, president and executive director of the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law Foundation, who will discuss the reconciliation process in South Africa; and Bridget Suhr, the director of regional programs at the Coalition for the International Criminal Court. The 2008 Digna Ochoa Human Rights Defender Award will be presented to the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice in San Diego. North Coast Symphony to perform

OCEANSIDE -- MiraCosta College's North Coast Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Swem, will present "A Romantic European Visit" at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 and 2 p.m. Oct. 26 at the college theater, 1 Barnard Drive. The performance will feature classical music's Romantic Period via masterworks by Mussorgsky, Enesco, Beethoven and Grieg. General admission is $10; students and seniors, $8. Oceanside Ale Works holds Oktoberfest

OCEANSIDE -- Oceanside Ale Works will hold Oktoberfest 2008 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 25 at 3800 Oceanic Drive, Suite 105. The company will debut two of its newest ales: Oso's Oktoberfest and MIA Imperial Munich. Other beers will be on tap and Dad's bratwursts and sauerkraut will be for sale. Bamboo society to hold show, sale

OCEANSIDE -- The American Bamboo Society will hold a free Rare & Unusual Bamboo Show & Sale Oct. 25 at MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive, also featuring an auction of rare bamboo. Preview of plants starts at 9 a.m. and auction begins at 10:30 with the plant sale from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Vendors will offer bamboo-related items including clothing, and Martin Espino, known for his American Indian-influenced music using bamboo instruments, will entertain. Take a 'Sideways' tour of wine country

OCEANSIDE -- MiraCosta College will take a "Sideways" tour of California's wine country Nov. 8 and 9. On the tour will be some of the places seen in the movie "Sideways," including Fess Parker Winery and Curtis Winery, among others. Overnight stay will be in the town of Solvang, where participants can enjoy dinner and shopping. Breakfast is included. This is an adults-only trip for those ages 18 and older. Participants must be at least 21 to join the wine tasting. Plan to spend $10-$15 at each winery for tasting and souvenir wine glass. Cost is $165 per person, double occupancy. Single supplement is $65. Cost includes transportation, hotel, breakfast and tour. Departure will be at 8 a.m. Nov. 8 from MiraCosta's San Elijo Campus, 3333 Manchester Ave., Cardiff; and 8:30 a.m. from parking lot 1A at the Oceanside campus, 1 Barnard Drive. Nature center seeks volunteers

Computer classes offered

VISTA -- The computer class, "Where Did That File Go?" will be held from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 21 at the McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. Cost is $15. "Introduction to the Internet" will be held from 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 30 and Nov. 6. Cost is $20.

Democrats to meet

CARLSBAD -- The Democratic Club of Carlsbad-Oceanside will meet from 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 25 at the Carlsbad Woman's Club, 3320 Monroe St. The club will discuss the upcoming election. Members and guests are asked to bring their charged-up cell phones for a get-out-the-vote "phonathon."

Esther Sanchez and Charles Lowery, Oceanside City Council candidates; and Maggie Houlihan and Rachelle Collier, Encinitas City Council candidates, will conduct brief workshops and distribute voting lists and phone scripts.

Kids learn to bake cookies

CARLSBAD -- The Carlsbad Recreation Department will host a baking class for ages 7-12, "Cookies! Cookies! Cookies!" from 3:50-5 p.m. Oct. 21 in the newly remodeled kitchen at the Harding Community Center, 3096 Harding St. Instructor is Julie Simpson. Library to host 'Fourth Tuesday' teen workshops

CARLSBAD -- The Carlsbad City Library will continue its series of free workshops designed to teach teens real-world skills (finances, research, how to get into college and job hunting) with "Get Into the College You Want" at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at Carlsbad City Library's Computer Lab, 1775 Dove Lane. Participants at the workshop will receive a brief introduction to some SAT testing strategies, tips on financial aid and how to apply to get into a college of choice. Also scheduled:

- Nov. 25, 7-8 p.m. "Get a Job." Tips on how to write a resume, craft a cover letter and how to prepare for the job interview.

City council candidates to speak at DEMA meeting

ENCINITAS -- The Downtown Encinitas MainStreet Association will meet at 9 a.m. Oct. 21 at the Encinitas Library, 540 Cornish Drive. The monthly MainStreet Morning event will feature a question-and-answer session with five of the 10 Encinitas City Council candidates. Candidates Doug Long, Maggie Houlihan, Betsy Aceti, Anthony Brandenburg and James Bond will speak about their positions for the upcoming election. Flute Choir to host guest artist
