Cat adoption events set
SAN DIEGO -- The Rescue House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding loving homes for unwanted, abandoned or abused cats, will hold cat and kitten adoptions from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 13 at Petco, 11160 Rancho Carmel Drive, Carmel Mountain Ranch.
The group also will hold a big adoption fair from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 20 and 21 at the Petco store at 8290 Mira Mesa Blvd. in Mira Mesa.

Music Men to give concert
SAN MARCOS -- The city will present "Autumn is Harmony Time," a concert featuring the Music Men Chorus with special guests The Harmonettes, at 3 p.m. Sept. 14 at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive.

City Council candidate forum planned
ESCONDIDO -- The Escondido Republican Club will hold an Escondido City Council candidate forum Sept. 15 at Cocina del Charro restaurant, 525 N. Quince St.
A buffet lunch will be served at noon followed by the one-hour candidate forum at 12:30 p.m. All six City Council candidates have been invited to participate. Check-in will begin at 11:30 a.m.

'Way of the Warrior' lecture on tap

Grand-opening event planned at gallery
ESCONDIDO -- A grand-opening celebration will be held Sept. 13 at the Escondido Municipal Gallery's new location, 262 E. Grand Ave. The free event will start at 11:30 a.m with an Art Connection talk by Chuck McPherson and continue into the afternoon with Festival Escondido and artists receptions from 5:30-10 p.m.
The new gallery space includes increased exhibition space, artist studios and workshop space. It is also connected to the new Gallery 262, which features more artists studios and newly created exhibition space.
The National Fiber Arts Exhibition will open in the main gallery and includes work by local fiber artists, as well as artists from other states. The PhotoArts group will open its "Textures of Light" exhibit in its new permanent InnerSpace Gallery within the Escondido Municipal Gallery.
Operated by the Escondido Arts Partnership, the Escondido Municipal Gallery is open from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Free admission. An ArtWalk featuring open studio tours and artists' receptions is held the second Saturday of each month.

Battery recycling event on tap
RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Rancho Bernardo Community Council is taking its first step in helping the community "go green" by offering a battery recycling event from 8 a.m.-1p.m. Sept. 13 in the industrial park area on Via del Campo off of West Bernardo Drive.
Council members will collect AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt and hearing aid batteries at the event and properly dispose of them. If the event is successful, the council will expand its "going green" efforts by placing battery recycling bins at the seven community centers in Rancho Bernardo.

Classic Car Show planned
POWAY -- The seventh annual MotorHead Madness.com Classic Car Show will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 13 at Poway Transmissions, 13933 Poway Road. Proceeds will benefit Soroptimist International of Poway, a women's civic organization.
The show is open to all years of cars and trucks, with nine trophy classes. Auto shops in the complex will hold open houses with prizes, drawings, giveaways, music, food and more. Cost to enter vehicles in the show is $20; $25 the day of the show. Free admission for spectators.
The event coincides with the city of Poway's annual Community Day celebration at Poway Community Park. A shuttle bus will run from the park to the car show from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Festival Escondido set for Sept. 13
ESCONDIDO -- The second annual "Festival Escondido" will be held Sept. 13 in downtown Escondido.
More than 15 restaurants/eateries will provide samples of their specialties from noon-3 p.m. while live music plays on Grand Avenue until 5:30 p.m. Beer tasting provided by Stone Brewing and wine tasting from Wiens Winery and Menghini Winery will take place at local galleries and museums.
Live musical entertainment will be performed at two venues on Grand Avenue from noon-3 p.m. Festival Headliner Eve Selis will give a concert at 3:30 p.m. All entertainment is free except Selis' concert, which is included with the purchase of a VIP ticket ($30) or the purchase of a separate concert ticket ($20).
There also will be free limo rides downtown, activities and art showcased at local galleries and museums and an all-day parking permit for all VIP ticket holders.
Presented by the Downtown Business Association, Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and the County of San Diego, the event is also a fundraiser for the Men's Fellowship Center in Escondido, with $5 from each VIP ticket sold going to the center.
