The Oceanside Civitans and San Luis Rey Rotary teamed up for the second year for Summer Shorts, live theater in downtown Oceanside at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre. The opening night gala on July 17 also was a fundraiser for the two clubs. About 100 people attended, raising about $2,000.
"We were thrilled and delighted," said Anne Speraw, a member of both clubs.
The funds are earmarked for one of the pet projects of the Civitans, helping the developmentally disabled, and Rotary's education missions, plus helping eradicate polio worldwide.
As people entered the lobby of the theatre, they were greeted by tables of fresh fruit and appetizers. They were able to choose a favorite beverage from the bar and chat with other theatergoers before entering the auditorium.
The "shorts" consist of eight original plays lasting from eight to 10 minutes each, bringing together at least 40 actors. Some of the writers of the plays attended.
The production ends Aug. 2 with a 2 p.m. show. People can vote for their favorite play during the run of the plays, after which the winning author will be recognized.
The original idea was to work with theater owners John and Yolanda Kalb to help people recognize there is live theater in downtown Oceanside, Speraw said.
Among those enjoying the event were Kay McDaniel, Frankie McHenry, Joan Zanco, Kathie Chan, Barbara Lindberg, Martha Farris, Maureen Harlin and Francis and Dixie Ritter. Francis Ritter was the winner of last year's competition. Also on hand were Lucille Cheresk, Ramona Hazlett, Anne Caywood, Jane Reich, Richard Leinaweaver and Connie J. Bennett, another of the playwrights. Also in attendance were Nielsine Archibald, Jeanne Cross, Dan McNamara, Jean Tweedie, Buck Taylor, Pat Raetz, Tom Sherry, Kate and Butch Reising, Marge Leyerly, Wendy and Frank Brophy.
