DEL MAR -- If you're headed to opening day at the Del Mar Race Track today, get there early and be patient with the inevitable traffic gridlock.
That's the advice of the California Highway Patrol.
"I think people should prepare for the worst" when it comes to traffic, CHP Officer Eric Newbury said. "That way if it's not (heavy traffic) they'll be pleasantly surprised."
Tens of thousands of racing fans are expected at the historic and seaside track.
Del Mar's gates open at noon on Wednesday and all weekdays. They open at 11:30 a.m. on weekends.
Directions and transportation options, including bus, train and limousine, are outlined at the race track's Web site: www.dmtc.com/season/directions.php
