Local law enforcement officials teamed with state alcohol investigators to make several arrests Wednesday at the Del Mar racetrack and in surrounding areas in the hopes of making opening day a bit safer, the sheriff's department said.
Outside the fairgrounds, officers made 12 DUI arrests, four drug arrests, one arrest of a felon in possession of a firearm and one drunk in public arrest. Those took place in Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas.
Inside the racetrack and in bars in the Del Mar area, authorities made five open alcohol container arrests, four drunk in public arrests, four arrests for minors in possession of alcohol and one arrest for possession of a fake identification.
Sheriff's officials said additional alcohol and DUI patrols will be conducted in the near future, though they did not disclose where.
