ENCINITAS -- A program that offers instruction to native Spanish and English speakers at Capri Elementary School has been notified that it will receive an award from the California School Boards Association.
The Golden Bell award will be presented during a ceremony Dec. 6, the Encinitas Union School District announced Thursday.
The dual-language program has been offered at Capri for five years. Students in the program initially receive 90 percent of their instruction in Spanish, but by fifth grade, classes are conducted 50 percent in Spanish and 50 percent in English.
Classes are made up of an equal number of Spanish and English speakers.
The Golden Bell awards recognize outstanding education programs in school districts and county offices of education in California.
