ENCINITAS -- A 45-year-old San Diego woman was killed in a head-on collision early Friday afternoon, said sheriff's Sgt. Randy Webb.
The crash occurred at about 1:45 p.m. in the 1300 block of Highway 101, Webb said. A Mercedes Benz convertible driven southbound by Debra Greenberg collided with a Ford Taurus driven northbound by Travis Godek, 25, of Del Mar.
Witness reports and evidence suggested Godek swerved into the oncoming traffic lane for unknown reasons, Webb said. Greenberg turned toward the outside guardrail to try to avoid the Taurus but was struck head-on, he said. Both drivers were wearing seat belts and airbags activated in both vehicles.
Greenberg was declared dead at the scene by the medical examiner. She is survived by her husband, Peter, and multiple young children, an investigator with the medical examiner's office said. The family had recently moved to San Diego from Colorado, Webb said.
Godek was taken by helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with serious injuries to his head and legs, Webb said. His condition is unknown.
Traffic was closed on Highway 101 between K Street and Chesterfield Drive for at least an hour as the crash was cleared and investigators collected evidence, Webb said.
The crash remains under investigation, Webb said. It does not appear that alcohol was a factor.
