Man arrested after chase
ENCINITAS -- A man suspected of drunken driving Saturday night tried to flee at more than 100 mph and crashed his car in a baseball field, officials said.
Shortly after 7 p.m., a deputy who suspected a man of driving drunk tried to stop a Mercedes on the 9600 block of Via Cantebria in Encinitas, sheriff's officials said.
Daniel McGowan, 28, fled the attempted traffic stop at more than 100 mph, evading the deputy until he crashed the Mercedes through a fence and onto the baseball field of nearby Leo Mullen Park, officials said.
Police dogs and a helicopter were called to the scene and McGowan, who fled his car on foot, was taken into custody after a running chase, they said.
McGowan was being held Sunday at the Vista jail on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, evading an officer with disregard for safety, and -- for crashing through the park fence -- fleeing the scene of an accident after causing property damage, according to county booking logs.
He was being held in lieu of $28,500 bail, logs said.
