ESCONDIDO - State food and agriculture officials announced Friday that a 78-square-mile area around the two sites where five Mexican fruit flies were discovered on Nov. 6 has been placed under agricultural quarantine.

Growers will not be allowed to sell or ship untreated produce grown within the quarantined area.

The quarantine is expected to last until the end of July, based on current life cycle projections, officials said. However, if more live fruit flies are found, the quarantine will be extended.

The fruit flies that triggered the quarantine were found in traps in northeast Escondido, near Bear Valley Parkway and Oak Hill Drive.

The quarantine boundaries are as follows:

- to the north at Woods Valley Road and the western boundary line of Daley Ranch

- to the south at Highland Valley Road.

- to the west at East Mission Road and Highway 78

- to the east at Rockwood Canyon Creek.

A map with the quarantine boundaries is available at www.cdfa.ca.gov
