ESCONDIDO -- Police cited 23 drivers and impounded 16 vehicles Wednesday in the first of two checkpoints scheduled this week, an Escondido police lieutenant said.
Wednesday's enforcement was held at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Tulip Street between noon and 2:30 p.m., Lt. James Stuard said. Of 948 vehicles that passed through, 796 were stopped and 36 were sent for a secondary inspection after drivers were unable to provide proof of a license.
Most of the 23 citations issued went to drivers with no license or a suspended licence, Stuard said.
The city's next DUI and driver's license checkpoint is scheduled to run from 6 p.m. Friday to 12:30 a.m. Saturday. The location has not been disclosed.
