ESCONDIDO -- A Vista man faces charges of drunken driving and evading a peace officer after a pursuit and rollover crash, Escondido police said Saturday.
Daniel Sandoval, 19, is suspected of fleeing police who arrived at the scene of a reported fight near Fifth Avenue and Hickory Street shortly after 11:30 p.m. Friday. An Escondido police news release states that Sandoval got into a gray Nissan four-door pickup and sped away with the headlights out.
A police sergeant pursued Sandoval in a patrol car, using a siren and emergency lights. The Nissan drove erratically toward downtown Escondido at speeds up to 60 mph, Lt. David Mankin said.
The Nissan made several turns and ended up on Rose Street. There the driver lost control and the vehicle temporarily left the road, returned and rolled over.
Sandoval, two adult men and a 17-year-old boy were inside the truck. No passengers were injured, though Sandoval had a serious hand injury, police said.
Passengers Leopoldo Sanchez and Roberto Martinez were arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public. The minor was arrested on suspicion of violating a curfew and possessing vandalism tools.
Officers determined Sandoval was under the influence of alcohol by noting his slurred speech, smelling him and looking at his eyes, Mankin said.
Sandoval was booked into the Vista jail and remained there Saturday night in lieu of $27,500 bail.
Drunken driving was listed as the primary cause of the crash, though the incident remained under investigation, police said.
Police are asking that anyone with additional information to contact Officer Mike Garcia at (760) 839-4729.
