LAKE HODGES -- A sewage spill of at least 36,000 gallons occurred Friday near Lake Hodges, prompting officials to post warning signs and shut down some drinking-water pumps.
The spill occurred approximately two miles south of Lake Hodges in a canyon adjacent to West Bernardo Avenue, according to officials, who said they don't know how much sewage reached the lake.
Signs warning of sewage-contaminated water will remain in place around Lake Hodges until water samples indicate the lake is safe for recreational use.
In addition, the pumps that send Lake Hodges water to the San Dieguito Reservoir for drinking water purposes will remain off until water sample results indicate that Lake Hodges water meets the drinking water standards.
