SAN DIEGO -- A 14-year-old Escondido girl who was stabbed multiple times in her home two months ago sat in Juvenile Court on Wednesday to watch a hearing for two of the three 14-year-old suspects accused of attacking her. It was the first time she's seen her attackers since the incident.
The victim, dressed in a denim skirt and a T-shirt, sat in the front row of the courtroom with her family. She walked without assistance and didn't have any visible injuries from the May 3 attack in her Goldenrod Street home.
But several stab wounds, and a subsequent operation at Rady Children's Hospital, left scars on her abdomen, said her mother Stephanie Wagner. The girl also continues to see a counselor about the attack, she said.
Wagner said the fact that the suspects have remained in custody has helped her daughter feel safer.
"She's standing up and staying strong," Wagner said of her daughter, who missed two weeks of school after she was stabbed.
No decision has been made about whether to try the 14-year-old suspects -- two girls and one boy -- as adults, though attorneys speaking to the families of the two girls said Wednesday the Juvenile Probation Department has recommended the case be moved to the adult system.
All three are charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and burglary.
The boy has an additional charge of robbery, while the girls are charged with dissuading a witness from providing information.
In back-to-back hearings Wednesday, the girls remained silent as Superior Court Judge George W. Clarke ordered that they remain in custody instead of being returned to their parents until their next hearing on Aug. 13. Their hair pulled up in a bun, the girls wore Kelly green T-shirts and dark pants issued by the juvenile detention center.
Both girls had family members in the audience, some of whom listened to the proceedings though a Spanish translator.
Throughout the case, Escondido police have remained quiet on the motive for the assault.
Officials have said that a video gaming console was involved in the incident, but that it did not precipitate the violence.
Likewise, they said, there may be romantic relationships between some of the teens involved, but those relationships did not result in the stabbing.
The stabbing was not gang-related, they said.
The girls charged in the case will appear in court Aug. 13.
A status hearing for the boy is scheduled for July 20.
The teens will remain in custody at least until their next hearing, or unless a judge orders their release. Minors in custody at Juvenile Hall do not have the option of posting bail.
