VALLEY CENTER -- A 60-year-old Escondido woman died Sunday when the motorcycle she was driving collided with a tanker truck, authorities said.
The woman -- identified by the county medical examiner's office as Sally Jean Mata -- was riding southbound on South Grade Road when she hit a three-axle tank trunk head-on as the truck was making a U-Turn, said California Highway Patrol Officer Richard Creighton.
The crash was reported at 1:05 p.m. and Mata was pronounced dead at 2:55 p.m. as she was transported to Palomar Hospital by helicopter, Creighton said.
The truck driver was not injured and the crash remains under investigation.
Mata was seriously injured but survived a two-vehicle crash on Palomar Mountain last year that left a Marine dead. She is survived by her husband.
