ESCONDIDO -- Fire ripped through a two-story home early Saturday in the Hidden Meadows neighborhood just north of Escondido, a CalFire captain said.
"Everything was lost but the garage and a car in the garage … Not even the roof was left," said Nick Schuler, a captain with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
No one was home during the fire, which was first reported about 5:45 a.m. at 28301 Cavalier Court.
Firefighters from the Deer Springs Fire Protection District contained the blaze to the structure despite 35 mph east winds that carried embers roughly a quarter-mile away, Schuler said.
The blaze was extinguished by about 7 a.m., he said. No firefighters were injured.
Two dogs may have been inside the home, though that had not been confirmed Saturday afternoon, Schuler added.
No damage estimate was available for the 3,000-square-foot home.
The Red Cross provided assistance to the family, which included at least one child.
The cause of the blaze remained under investigation.
