Crash not related to major bike race
ESCONDIDO -- A bicyclist died Sunday after a collision with a vehicle on South Centre City Parkway on Sunday afternoon, officials said.
The crash, which happened shortly after 4 p.m., involved one northbound vehicle and was unrelated to the Amgen cycling race that ended in the city this afternoon, police said.
Police and paramedics were unable to save the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not available Sunday afternoon.
A traffic alert was called because the crash closed lanes on Centre City, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was determined to have occurred in the Escondido Police Department's jurisdiction and they will handle the investigation.
Earlier in the day, a spectator on a bicycle was hit on the path of the Amgen Tour of California, a nine-day race conducted in eight stages across the state.
The crash occurred before the racers arrived and was quickly cleared from the roadway.
The cyclist was transported to a local hospital but did not appear to have suffered serious injuries, police said.
