ESCONDIDO ---- A more than five-hour standoff between police and a carjacking suspect at a Valley Parkway apartment complex ended peacefully early Saturday when the man surrendered, a sheriff's sergeant said.

Pedro Santana, a parolee and suspected gang member, was sought by authorities after a reported carjacking in Vista on Wednesday.

Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Miedecke of the North County Regional Gang Task Force said Santana allegedly stole the car of a female acquaintance after pointing a gun at her and having a round go off when the two struggled over the weapon.

When the shot was fired, the woman told authorities she relinquished the car to Santana and two other men.

After determining the suspect in that incident was Santana, deputies tracked him to an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Valley Parkway and went there to arrest him around 8 p.m. Friday, Miedecke said.

When efforts to get him to come out of the apartment failed, authorities evacuated more than 20 surrounding residents. A standoff ensued until about 1:30 a.m. Saturday when Santana exited the apartment and was taken into custody without incident, Miedecke said.
