Police are seeking the public's help in locating an Escondido couple missing since last week.
Melissa Dixon, 30, and Mathew Vasquez, 30, were last seen by customs agents crossing into the United States from Mexico through the San Ysidro border crossing on Aug. 23 at about 8:30 a.m., Escondido police Lt. Craig Carter said.
Friends saw the two in Dixon's Escondido apartment on Sunday, Aug. 22, where they gathered to watch a football game, said Melissa's father, Tim Dixon. For some unknown reason, the two later went to Mexico and were seen returning on Monday, Dixon said.
Both came back to Escondido and withdrew money from their banks and have not been heard from since, Carter said.
Dixon said his daughter had recently met Vasquez at work. She told her father that he was "a nice Christian guy."
Acting on a tip, Dixon chartered an airplane on Sunday to search the roads from Escondido to the Grand Canyon, but found nothing, he said. One of his daughter's friends said Melissa wanted to visit the Grand Canyon, Dixon said.
"This could be just two kids goofing off," Dixon said. "But this is now seven days and that's not right."
No crime or foul play is suspected; however, the families of the two individuals are worried, Craig said.
"Right now, we are listing them as 'voluntarily missing,'" Craig said.
The couple may be travelling in Dixon's red, 1990 Mazda Miata with a plate number of 4SQR528. The car is a two-seat, convertible with a missing rear window.
