ESCONDIDO -- City firefighters, along with an off-duty San Marcos firefighter, doused a house fire on the northeast edge of Escondido on Monday afternoon, fire officials said.
The blaze was reported at 3:24 p.m. at 1526 Esperanza Way just north of Sheridan Avenue, officials said.
The off-duty firefighter, who formerly worked for Escondido and lives near Esperanza Way, arrived first and helped the homeowner exit the home and attended to her outside, said Escondido fire Battalion Chief Randy Brookes. The woman was later taken to Palomar Medical Center with minor smoke inhalation.
The fire started in a bedroom near the woman's computer, Brookes said. While an electrical problem may be to blame, the official cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday evening, he said.
Firefighters contained the blaze to the home and knocked it down at 3:37 p.m., about six minutes after arriving, Brookes said.
The home and its contents sustained about $50,000 in damage, the battalion chief estimated.
