LAKE ELSINORE ---- Hundreds of homes are destined to sprout on the hills east of downtown Lake Elsinore after a development plan received the City Council's blessing this week.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a tentative map for the Spyglass Ranch project, which will enable the property owner to market the development to builders.
The plan divides 258 acres into 443 single-family home lots, eight estate lots, two lots for homes arranged around courtyards, one lot for apartments or commercial development, plus a park and open space.
The developer agreed to pay the full cost of improving Camino del Norte, a two-lane road alongside Interstate 15, and help pay for other roads that will serve the community.
Spyglass Ranch also agreed to revise the plan to include eight estate lots, rather than two. On one of those lots sits an 80-year-old house that local lore associates with Johnny Weissmuller, a 1920s Olympics swimming hero also reputed for playing Tarzan in movies. Spyglass representatives agreed to leave the house up and seek to have it renovated.
