Chalk up another bull's-eye for the Marine Corps.
On Friday, Camp Pendleton is celebrating a big win over the Army, a traditional military rival.
Shooters from the Southern California base's School of Infantry have returned home with the top prize in the ninth annual U.S. Army Sniper Competition that took place Oct. 14-22 at Fort Benning, Ga.
Much to the chagrin of the Army, the Camp Pendleton win is the first time a non-Army unit has captured first place.
The competition pits sniper teams against one another in field firing, advanced marksmanship, nontraditional firing positions and physical fitness.
Each team consisted of a shooter and spotter who worked together to hit their targets.
The win will be celebrated Friday afternoon with congratulatory remarks from the shooters' commanding officer, Col. Brennan Byrne.
