SAN CLEMENTE -- A Marine killed when the car he was in crashed into a tree in San Clemente over the weekend was identified Sunday as 22-year-old Cpl. Edmond K. Vandecasteele IV.

Vandecasteele was an ammunition technician with the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton, 2nd Lt. Joshua Benson said. He was from Rockingham, N.H. and joined the Marines in September 2006.

Vandecasteele was the front seat passenger in a car with three other Camp Pendleton-based Marines, when the vehicle crashed into a tree in San Clemente about 2:15 a.m. Saturday, Benson said.

The driver was listed in critical condition at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo on Sunday morning, Benson said. The injured driver was not identified.

Two other Marines in the back seat were not injured, Benson said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash. Sheriff's officials have said that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
