A military jury on Tuesday acquitted a Camp Pendleton Marine of a charge that he willfully violated an order by talking to a newspaper reporter about a criminal case involving a breach of classified material, officials said.
Two years ago, now Pvt. Gary Maziarz, then an intelligence analyst and gunnery sergeant in the Marine Corps, pleaded guilty to giving stolen top-secret anti-terrorism files to two Los Angeles law enforcement officials.
As part of that plea deal, Maziarz agreed to keep mum about the case with journalists for one year. After his release from the brig, Maziarz was given a new order cautioning him against talking to reporters and advising him to speak to his attorney before going public.
According to testimony, Maziarz did so, getting an OK from his attorney before granting an interview to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
