Jonnie Russell

Shortly before midnight on March 4, 2007, Jonnie Ruth Bullock Russell ascended to heaven to be with her Lord, having been diagnosed with cancer two months prior. Her family is grateful her suffering was short.

Jonnie was born in 1927 to Amos and Maude Bullock in Pasadena, California. She was the youngest of five daughters. She married William R. Russell in 1946. Together they had three children, Kate, Chris and Bill. They celebrated their 60th anniversary last December.

Jonnie worked as a teacher's aide for the Carlsbad Unified School District for 25 years. She made many a friend within the school district - teachers, aides and children. Once a month for over 10 years, she was one of several aides who gathered for lunch at nearby restaurants to share a good meal and news of recent trips and family milestones.

Jonnie was an avid gardener, especially proud of her green thumb with roses and orchids. She was one of the first to join the Jazzercise program in the early 1970s and walked several miles a day for many years. Her family kidded her that she was the most fit of all of them.

Thelma Sebby Oviatt

Thelma Sebby Oviatt passed away February 21, 2007.

Seb, as she was affectionately called by relatives and co-workers, became her trademark. Most friends did not know her

real name. Seb was born on a farm in North Dakota, one of 10 children. When she graduated from high school during the Depression she opted for applying to enter nurses training because her parents could not afford to pay for her to go to college. In nurses training housing and meals were provided, along with a small stipend for spending money.

When Seb graduated in 1935, nurses were paid so little, Seb became attracted to the airlines because they paid so much more. This adventure as a stewardess with TWA was not what she really wanted to do. She stayed two years and then returned to the hospital, where she had trained and was employed in the operating room. She left Chicago in 1939 and continued to work in the operating room in a hospital in California.

In 1947 she decided to enhance her career and returned to school and earned a degree in Medical Record Library Science. Her career as a health record professional spanned 50 years, during which time she was employed in three major health centers, UCLA, Kaiser Permanente and Palomar Medical Center. In addition, she taught medical terminology and anatomy under the Adult Education Program at UCLA for 10 years.

She retired from her position as director of medical records at Kaiser Permanente when she reached age 65 and moved from the San Fernando Valley to San Marcos. However, after working in the health care field so long and liking it, she found she was not ready for retirement. She started visiting hospitals in the area with the thought of working as a volunteer in medical records. When she visited Palomar Medical Center she was asked to work on a project for which she would receive compensation. This project led to a part-time job which soon became a full-time job and a supervisory position. She continued working full-time and at age 79 retired the second time and relocated to Borrego Springs. Her husband had retired in 1968 and died in 1999.

Seb is survived by her brother, Norman; and sister Rosemary; and their families; and two stepchildren, Joseph Oviatt and Jane Stevens and their children and grandchildren. It was Seb's wish that her husband's and her ashes be buried next to her sister Agnes' grave beside their mother's grave at Immanuel Cemetery near the farm in North Dakota, where she was born.

He worked at banking for six years, then as an accountant at Packard Motor Company. He and Elizabeth moved to San Gabriel in 1942, where he was a production planner at Vultee Aircraft Company. In 1946 he moved to Oceanside, where he entered the car business. He worked for Lucky Lackey, Rorick Buick, Dixon Ford, Pacific Packard and then was part owner of Studebaker. He owned and operated his own used car business for 30 years until he retired and became a life insurance salesman and funeral counselor at Eternal Hills, where he retired at 80 years of age.
