Lowell Keith Weeks

July 24, 1917 - January 15, 2007

L. Keith Weeks, born on July 24, 1917, on a farm north of Mott, N.D., died Monday night (Jan. 15) in Oceanside, Calif., following a brief illness after falling and breaking a hip. Keith lived a full life of music - composing, arranging, playing, directing and teaching music, gathering in those around him. And yet, in the end, only they could hear him play. Like Beethoven, Keith lost his hearing, but not the touch of the ivories on his keyboard. Long retired from many years as head of the music department in the California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, Calif., he continued to play in jazz bands throughout the region until his hearing impairment set in.

So beloved was he that a troupe of student musicians from Cal Poly, came all the way from Pomona to surprise him with a serenade at his retirement home recently. He didn#,t hear but a straying refrain of it, but he was overcome by their coming to see him.

In his teens he had his own jazz orchestra in Mott, with the whispering Hawaiian refrains of "Song of the Islands" as their theme. Majoring in music at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, Keith played gigs with the Varsity Club band while studying the intricacies of the classics in the classroom.

After graduation, Keith taught briefly at an elementary school in Los Lunas, N.M., until the U.S. Army Air Corps sought him out at the beginning of World War II to direct the band at a nearby airbase.

From there he was summoned to Fort Myer, Va., The Army school of music. When he finished top in his class, he was given his choice of stations to head their band. He chose Palm Springs, where he was fortunate to have some of Hollywood's best musicians with him. It also meant that he could be with his wife, Florence, and their two children, Donna and Linda.

After the war, Keith's urge to have a family life led him to turn down an application from the military to direct the band at West Point. He accepted an offer from Cal Poly, then a tiny college in San Dimas to teach music to the young students.

On holiday occasions, he was sought by "big bands" of the jazz era to play gigs from the blaze of lights in Las Vegas to the stage at Disneyland. He kept his membership in the Musicians Union in Los Angeles for a lifetime.

After his wife died and in retirement, he took as his companion Margaret McGrath, former head of the library department at Cal Poly. The McGraths took him in as a member of their family and kept in touch with him after Margaret died six years ago.

He took his instruments, a grand piano and several electronic keyboards and his own library of music to Pacific Place Retirement Home, where he died.

Besides his daughters, Donna Weeks Fay, a professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and Linda Dathe, a professional singer now living in Idaho, he is survived by his sister, Lois NeSmith at Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and brother, Paul, in Oceanside, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Keith's ashes will be placed next to the interments of his parents and his wife in Glendora, and a grand, musical celebration of his life - complete with his own recorded music and his voice will be scheduled in Oceanside later.

Philip P. Gaudet Sr.

Phil was born July 29, 1930, in Andover, Mass., and passed away peacefully at home in Escondido Jan. 16, 2007. He made Escondido his home for 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Mary; brother Wilford; sister Anita; daughter Kerri; and grandson Trace.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jan; daughters Cheri and Barri; sons Flip and Mike; as well as sisters Kathleen, Olive, Amelia, Theresa and Carol Ann; brothers Clifford, John, Austin and Richard; and cousin Joe, whom he considered a brother; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Phil served in the Navy during the Korean War. After traveling the world with the Navy he ended up in San Diego, where he met his wife, Jan, a San Diego native. After the Navy he became a San Diego police officer while attending college. Phil first came to Escondido in 1952 to help a Navy friend build a house as he was accomplished in nearly every phase of construction.

Phil and Jan moved to Escondido to raise their family in 1956. He started a home design and drafting business, &#8220Escondido Blueprint and Drafting" in 1956 and designed thousands of homes and buildings throughout San Diego. Phil was a San Diego State alumni with a degree in engineering, a past member of the Lions Club, and an avid stamp collector, and loved woodworking and construction. He was also a huge sports fan rooting for the hometown Chargers and the Padres (unless they were playing against the Red Sox). He said he was glad he lived to see the Red Sox win a World Series.

Phil lived his life the way he wanted and collected a lifetime of family, friends and memories to take with him. We are all happy we could be part of it.

He will be missed.
