Howard Nakken, 80

SAN MARCOS - Howard J. Nakken, 80, died Sunday, April 1, 2007, at Silverado Senior Living in Escondido.

Born Aug. 1, 1926, in Kalamazoo, Mich., he lived in San Marcos since 1975. He was vice president of McMahan Furniture Co., where he worked for 43 years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of Emmanuel Faith Community Church Choir for 25 years.

Mr. Nakken was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Bernice Louise Nakken, in 2000; daughter Maryanne Teich in 2000; and sister Lucille Sopjes in 2004.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Janie and Phillip Hardy of Escondido and Linda and Buzz Wynbeek of Rockford, Mich.; brothers and sisters-in-law Lavern and Phyllis Nakken and Don and Betty Nakken, all of Kalamazoo; sister and brother-in-law Adelaide and Harold Vanderveen of Kalamazoo; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Private cremation and interment at San Marcos Cemetery is planned.

Frances Loewner, 88

SOLANA BEACH - Frances Loewner, 88, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007.

Born July 17, 1918, in Cleveland, she lived in Solana Beach for 55 years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Loewner was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Loewner, in 1980.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Alan Leftwick of Solana Beach; sisters Jeanne Leonard of Cleveland and Eileen Shwartz of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Private services are planned.

Rae Fawley-Middleton, 72

OCEANSIDE - Rae Ellen Fawley-Middleton, 72, died of chronic pulmonary disease Tuesday, March 27, 2007.

Born Jan. 3, 1935, in Decatur, Ill., she lived in Oceanside for seven years. She received a bachelor's degree in music education from Milliken University in 1957 and a master's degree in education from Webster College in 1972.

She was a member and assistant organist at Richmond Heights Presbyterian Church and alto lead and assistant organist at Central Presbyterian Church and Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She was secretary for the Ocean Hills "Village Voice" newsletter.

Mrs. Fawley-Middleton was preceded in death by her mother, Marian Esther Miller, in 1983 and father Daniel Edward Fawley in 1999.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, James Daniel Middleton, of New York City, and Richard Alan and Nora Middleton of Encinitas; daughter and son-in-law Kathryn Louise and Vigen Markarian of La Crescenta; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at Ocean Hills Clubhouse in Oceanside. Her cremains will be scattered at sea.

Bob Grice, 87

ENCINITAS - Bob Grice, 87, died Friday, March 30, 2007.

He was born Jan. 17, 1920, on the family homestead which is now part of the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course. He operated the first car wash in Encinitas, worked at Encinitas Pharmacy and Ted Wright's Ideal Market. He graduated from San Dieguito High School in the first class of 1937. He attended San Diego State College and worked at the Del Mar Turf Club.

He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was the owner of the Grice, Lund and Tarkington accounting office in Encinitas, Escondido and Carlsbad. He served on the boards of the Society of California Accountants, San Dieguito Union High School, the California State Board of Accountancy, the San Dieguito National Bank, Forest Home Christian Conference Center, Scripps Memorial Hospital Advisory Board and the San Dieguito Heritage Museum.

He was the grand marshal of the Encinitas Christmas Parade in 2006.

Mr. Grice is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jan Grice; daughters Darlene Sottile and Barbara Grice; sons and daughters-in-law Richard and Carolyn Grice, Bruce and Rhonda Grice and Rob and Cathy Grice; sister Bettie Wolfe; nine granddaughters; and nine great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at the Carlsbad Community Church, 3175 Harding St. in Carlsbad.

James Smith, 57

OCEANSIDE - James Joseph Smith, 57, died Thursday, March 29, 2007.

Born Aug. 20, 1949, in Queens, N.Y., he lived in Oceanside for 33 years. He was a Vista American Little League coach.

Mr. Smith is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Priya Smith of Encinitas; daughter and son-in-law Nicole and Chris Whaley of Oceanside; brother William Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

A cryptside service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 5, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, 1999 El Camino Real in Oceanside.

Gloria McCormick, 81

VISTA - Gloria Ann McCormick, 81, died Sunday, April 1, 2007, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born July 27, 1925, in Chicago, she lived in Vista since 1950. She worked at Marshall Fields in Chicago. She was a volunteer for Triple M, San Luis Rey Academy, St. Francis Catholic Church and Tri-City Medical Center. She enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the El Camino Women's Golf team for many years. She was a Notre Dame football fan.

Mrs. McCormick is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert McCormick; daughters Brigid Brower, Tricia Ceresa and Molly McCormick; son-in-law Bob Brower; brother Buddy Hensley; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. and rosary recited at 7 p.m. today, April 4, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, Vista Chapel.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, Vista Chapel. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Helen Wilson, 79

ESCONDIDO - Helen Ann Wilson, 79, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at her home.

Born Feb. 1, 1928, in Muskegon Heights, Mich., she lived in San Diego County for 60 years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Perry Langford Jr., in 1962; and second husband Jim Wilson in 1997.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Earl

Perry III and Nancy Langford of San Diego and David Langford of Murrieta; daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Bill Scales of Escondido; sister Irene Brothers of East Jordan, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at McLeod Mortuary in Escondido. Inurnment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery is planned.

Tiec Nguyen, 83

ESCONDIDO - Tiec Nguyen, 83, died of natural causes Sunday, April 1, 2007, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born July 12, 1923, in Saigon, Vietnam, he lived in Escondido for 14 years.

Mr. Nguyen was preceded in death by his wife, Cai Nguyen.

He is survived by his sons, Anh Nguyen of San Diego and My Nguyen of Vietnam; daughters Hoa Nguyen and Ngan Wilke, both of Escondido, Duc Nguyen of Winchester and Phuong Nguyen of San Marcos; 21 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today, April 4, at Good Shepard Catholic Church in Mira Mesa.

Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

Amanda Brim, 23

TEMECULA - Amanda Marie Brim, 23, died Saturday, March 31, 2007.

Born Dec. 23, 1983, in Torrance, she lived in Temecula for two years. She lived in Fallbrook previously. She graduated from Fallbrook High School. She was a volunteer at Fallbrook Hospital. She enjoyed writing poetry, singing, and taking pictures and video of her family.

Ms. Brim was preceded in death by her father, David Brim, in 2003.

She is survived by her companion of four years, Jorge Cervantes of Temecula; mother Michelle Gonsalez of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; stepmother Elizabeth Brim of Eugene, Ore.; son Joshua Michael Cervantes of Temecula; brother David Brim Jr. of Temecula; sister and brother-in-law Crystal and Douglas Pearce of Temecula; and stepsister Kristen Wolfe of Eugene.

Visitation is scheduled from 1 p.m. to the start of the funeral service at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary Chapel.

Michael Webber, 37

SAN MARCOS - Michael Richard Webber, 37, died Friday, March 30, 2007, at his home.

Born March 25, 1970, in Chippewa Falls, Wis., he lived in San Marcos since 1977. He was a sales representative for Beacon Electric Supply for 15 years.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion. He coached San Marcos Girl's Softball.

He was a Padres and Chargers fan.

Mr. Webber is survived by his wife of 15 years, Ann Webber of San Marcos; parents Janet and Richard Webber of Chippewa Falls; daughters Kirsten Webber and Elena Webber, both of San Marcos; brother and sister-in-law Rodney and Ann Webber of Torrance; and sisters and brother-in-law Debbie Anacleto of Vista and Joanne and Dan Faschingbauer of Chippewa Falls.

Visitation and viewing are scheduled from 1 p.m. to the start of the funeral service at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at North Coast Church in Vista with the Rev. J.D. Larson officiating.

Private inurnment at San Marcos Cemetery in San Marcos is planned.

Norma Hamilton, 86

ESCONDIDO - Norma Palmquist Hamilton, 86, died Saturday, March 31, 2007.

Born Sept. 9, 1920, in Winfred, S.D., she lived in Escondido for 10 years. She was a payroll supervisor for 15 years. She worked at Coinco American Inc. She was a member of Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido.

She enjoyed arts and crafts, crossword puzzles, gardening, sewing, traveling, reading, and china painting.

Mrs. Hamilton was preceded in death by her former husband, Floyd Hamilton, in 2005; and sisters Leone Epp in 1980 and June Jameson in 1980.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Rick Hamilton and Terry and Grit Hamilton, all of Valleyford, Wash., and Keith Hamilton of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; sisters and brother-in-law La Vaughn Ayers, and Doris and Art Thelin, all of Escondido, Victoria Garner of Boca Raton, Fla., and Lucille Ufford of San Marcos; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Viewing is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to the start of the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 5, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary, 225 S. Broadway in Escondido.

Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Escondido.

Imeagene Goodwin, 84

CARLSBAD - Imeagene Goodwin, 84, died of lymphoma Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at Scripps Hospital in Encinitas.

Born June 18, 1922, in Nashville, Tenn., she lived in Carlsbad for 52 years. She retired in 1972 after 18 years as co-owner of AL'N' Dale Cleaners. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Oceanside and Eufaula, Okla., where she worked in the Bible school.

Mrs. Goodwin was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dale Goodwin, in 2002. She is survived by her son, Dennis Goodwin of San Diego; daughters and son-in-law Drew and Dennis Duke of Oceanside and Dianne Fellman of Riverside; sister-in-law Bonnie Van Wagner of San Diego; 12 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at Eternal Hills Mortuary with the Rev. Ralph Gault officiating.

Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park with the Rev. Gault officiating.

Thomas Scholder, 80

ESCONDIDO - Thomas Harvey Scholder, 80, died recently in March, at Meadowview.

He was born in 1926, in Keensburg, Colo., and came to San Diego in the 1940s. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper.

He graduated from SDSU as an electronics engineer. He retired in 1998 from BAE Systems.

He worked at Cape Kennedy at the missile program and the guidance system for GLOTRAC program as well as the AZUSA, Apollo and ARMS.

He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church for 55 years, serving as deacon, elder and chairman of the building and grounds. He was a missionary to the poor in Tijuana.

He was a "packrat," a Star Trekee, a John Wayne fan, a Republican and a Mason.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3902 Kenwood Drive in Spring Valley.

The family suggests casual clothes and work gloves to help plant a tree and vine in his memory.

A reception will follow at Williams Hall. No graveside service is planned.

Richard R. O'Neil, MD

1931 - 2007

Richard R. O'Neil, MD, FAAP, died unexpectedly at the age of 75 from a heart attack on March 21, 2007, at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas.

Richard was born in the Bronx, New York, on May 30, 1931. He was the youngest son of Salvation Army officers. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University in New York, in 1953, and received a medical degree from Albany Medical College in 1957.

Richard completed his internship and residency in pediatrics in 1960 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. From 1960 to 1962, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a Captain and was the Chief of Pediatrics at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nev.

He began his career in private practice in 1962 at Tri-City Pediatrics in Oceanside, California. From 1987-1988, Richard served as Chief of Staff of Tri-City Hospital and Medical Center. He was a pediatrician with Scripps Clinic San Marcos from 1988-1997. He retired in 1997.

Richard was elected to the Carlsbad School Board from 1973-1978 and was president for three of those years. During that time, he was most proud of the fact that he presented all four of his children with their high school diplomas. Richard served as an Elder at The First Presbyterian Church in Oceanside, California.

He was a faithful and beloved husband of 52 years to his wife, Ruth, wonderful and loving father and friend to his children, Cyndie (Michael), Carolyn (Roger), Beth (Larry), and Richard Jr. (Laura), much-loved "Pop Pop" to his five grandchildren, Karl, Emily, Katy, Meghan, and Tommy, dear brother of Wilbur Jr. (Paulette) and William (Ruth), and uncle to many nieces and nephews. His family was his greatest joy and he will be greatly missed.

A celebration of Richard's life will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church, 7807 Centella Street, Carlsbad, California, (760) 753-3290.

Irene S. Meyers

Irene S. Meyers, 88, was born in Philadelphia and raised in Atlantic City, N.J. She had a very rich, full, and colorful life. She lived in NYC, LA, Miami, Oceanside, Calif., Phoenix, and most recently Fort Myers.

She enjoyed working and had several careers throughout her life, but her most challenging and rewarding job was being mother to six stepchildren, grandmother to nine and great- grandmother to one. She loved and supported her family and they loved and supported her back.

Irene loved people and was a friend to many. She was often there to lend a hand in time of need.

She valued friendship and maintained lifelong ties and friends across the country.

Irene held strong spiritual convictions and after ill health and the challenge of sudden total blindness she welcomed joining her maker.

The family will hold a private ceremony following cremation.

Gloria Ann McCormick

Gloria Ann McCormick, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died Sunday, April 1, 2007, at Tri-City Hospital after complications from heart surgery.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 27, 1925. The first in her family to graduate from high school, Gloria worked at Marshall Fields of Chicago until her marriage to the true love of her life, Robert McCormick. They were married in the Log Chapel at the University of Notre Dame on October 19, 1946, and enjoyed more than 60 years together.

In 1950, Robert was assigned to Camp Pendleton and he and Gloria then settled in Vista, where they spent most of their North County years.

No one could have asked for a more wonderful mother. Gloria loved raising her three daughters, whether that meant teaching them to mop floors or getting over their fear of riding the Matterhorn at Disneyland.

In addition to taking care of her family, Gloria also enjoyed her volunteer work with Triple M, San Luis Rey Academy, St. Francis Catholic Church and Tri-City Hospital.

An avid golfer, Gloria was a member of the El Camino Women's Golf team for many years.

Her other passion was Notre Dame football and the only time a person may have found her less than her usual gracious self was on a day when Notre Dame lost a game.

Not only a caring mother, wife and grandmother, Gloria was also a loyal friend to the many people blessed enough to come in contact with her. She had a style and ability to draw people to her through her kindness and caring. She was truly beautiful, both physically and inside.

Her most recent joy came with the birth of her two great-grandsons - Michael Todd Brower and Malachi Nohea Smith.

Gloria is survived by her husband, Robert; her daughters, Brigid McCormick Brower, Tricia Ceresa and Molly McCormick; son-in-law Bob Brower; her grandchildren, Matthew and Erica Brower, Emily and Chris Smith and Nicholas Ceresa; her two great-grandchildren; and her brother, Buddy Hensley.

Visitation for Mrs. McCormick will be today, April 4, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel, with the rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.

Services will be held Thursday April 5, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
