POWAY - Amanda E. Sherman, 96, died of natural causes Monday, Jan. 29, 2007, at her home.
Born in Korn, Okla., in 1910, she lived in Poway for 25 years. She was a president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the WWI Veterans.
Mrs. Sherman is survived by her daughters, Helen Davis of Poway and Kim Gromanski of Dallas; son Earl Sherman of Chicago; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services have been held.
Mary Carranza, 62
OCEANSIDE - Mary Alice Carranza, 62, died of cancer Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, in San Diego.
Born Aug. 14, 1944, in Oceanside, she lived in Oceanside all her life. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Carranza was preceded in death by her parents, John and Leovi Carranza; brothers Roy and George; and sister Rosie Carranza.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Lisa Mata of Oceanside, Sheri and Marc Valencia of Huntley, Ill., and Bridgette Sanchez of Vista; brothers and sister-in-law John Carranza of Vista and Clem and Nita Carranza of Orlando, Fla.; sisters and brother-in-law Barbara and Norman Dorion of Carlsbad, Hope Verdugo of Monterey and Josie Moreno of Vista; and two grandchildren.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at St. Mark's Catholic Church.

SAN MARCOS - Marion Licata, 68, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007.
Born Sept. 1, 1938, in Passaic, N.J., she lived in San Diego County for 27 years. She enjoyed playing bingo, reading and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Licata was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Sudol; and brothers Steve Ratzer and Fred Ratzer.
She is survived by her sons, Richard Licata of Oceanside and Joseph Licata of Escondido; daughters Dawn Koutsky of San Marcos, Darlene Simonian of Wildomar and
Donna Lowrance of Winchester; sisters Esther Jochmann of Wayne, N.J., Charlotte Barbara of Nutley, N.J., and Barbara Wilk of West Yarmouth, Mass.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Emmanuel Faith Chapel in Escondido. Private inurnment at Crest Haven Cemetery in Clifton, N.J., is planned.

OCEANSIDE - Anna Violet Sorensen, 90, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007.
Born Sept. 10, 1916, in Madison, Wis., she lived in Oceanside for 11 years. She retired in 1988 as a secretary for Bay Ridge Baptist Church. She was a member of Lighthouse Christian Church of Oceanside.
Mrs. Sorensen was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold M. Sorensen, in 1981.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Barbara Sorensen of Garner, N.C.; daughter Ruth Sorensen of Oceanside; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, 1999 El Camino Real in Oceanside with the Rev. Richard Miller officiating.

John Hazelton, 90
CORONADO - John William Hazelton, 90, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2007.
Born May 15, 1916, in Chicago, he lived in San Diego County for 18 years, and previously in Carlsbad. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded two Bronze Stars.
He was an electrician for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union in Chicago. He was a member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed international travel and square dancing.
Mr. Hazelton was preceded in death by his first wife, Victoria Tranchita-Hazelton, in 1990; and second wife Helene Hazelton in 2002.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Hazelton of Los Angeles; and granddaughter Michelle.
A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery, 4050 Mission Ave. in Oceanside.

SAN MARCOS - Warner D. McFaddin, 79, died of cancer Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007.
Born Oct. 12, 1927, in Washington, he lived in San Marcos for 17 years. He retired in 1989 from GTE Directory Co.
Mr. McFaddin is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dona
McFaddin of San Marcos; daughters and son-in-law Melissa McFaddin of Castroville, Shelly and Kerry Prewett of Richland, Wash., and Denise McFaddin of Marina; sister and brother-in-law Marcia and Bill McChesney of Eugene, Ore.; and five grandchildren.
His cremains will be scattered at sea.

Max Murdock, 93
POWAY - Max E. Murdock, 93, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, in San Diego.
Born Feb. 28, 1913, in Herber, Utah, he lived in Poway for 47 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
Mr. Murdock is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marcella Murdock of Poway.
Interment is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside.

ESCONDIDO - Jairo Armando Patino, 71, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007.
Born Nov. 20, 1935, in Boyaca, Colombia, he lived in Escondido for 13 years. He was a longtime contributor to the Los Angeles Mission.
Mr. Patino is survived by his sons, Jairo Patino Jr.,
Henry Patino and Sergio

Donald Hood, 79
SUN CITY - Donald Leslie Hood, 79, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, in Murrieta.
Born Feb. 2, 1928, in Eugene, Ore., he lived in Sun City for two years. He retired in 1987 after 34 years as a construction superintendent for the Vista Irrigation District in Vista. He was a deacon for First Southern Baptist Church of Seres. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.
Mr. Hood was preceded in death by his wife, Gene Hood, in 1998; son Robbie Hood in 2005; and a great-granddaughter. He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Roxanne and Rickie and Bob; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, 1999 El Camino Real in Oceanside.

SAN MARCOS - Maria de Strakosch, 103, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007.
Born Jan. 8, 1904, in Vienna, Austria, she lived in San Marcos for 13 years. She was a skier, mountaineer, world traveler, journalist and horseback rider.
Mrs. de Strakosch was preceded in death by her husband, Hans de Strakosch.
She is survived by her nephews and stepchildren.
A celebration of life was held.
Paul Gierszewicz, 48
LA MESA - Paul W. Gierszewicz, 48, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at his home.
Born Aug. 18, 1958, in San Francisco, he lived in San Diego County for 30 years. He graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1977, where he excelled in math, surfing and track.
He enjoyed hiking and flying and took instruction at Palomar Airport and ground instruction at Palomar College.
Mr. Gierszewicz is survived by his parents, Peggy and Walt Gierszewicz of Ramona; and sisters and brothers-in-law Robin and Doug Harding of San Clemente and Suzanne and Doug Boag of Berryville, Va.
Viewing and funeral service are scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Edenview Funeral Chapel in San Marcos.

Gary Ferris, 71
FALLBROOK - Gary Lee Ferris, 71, died of pulmonary fibrosis Friday, Feb. 2, 2007.
Born Jan. 5, 1936, in Plattsmouth, Neb., he lived in Fallbrook for nine years. He retired as a data processing manager at Aerospace Corp. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957 as a radioman 3rd Class.
Mr. Ferris was preceded in death by his parents, Fonda and Kenneth Ferris; and brothers Marvin and Richard Ferris. He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Donald and Judith Kaufman of Irvine and Jonathan Kaufman of Yuba City; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Pala Mesa Resort Sun Room in Fallbrook. A private cremation is planned.

RANCHO BERNARDO - James Gilbert Cousins, 83, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, in Poway.
Born March 14, 1923, in Macomb, Ill., he lived in Rancho Bernardo and Escondido for 30 years. He was a sales manager for Pfister Hybrid Seed Corn Co. in Illinois.
Mr. Cousins was preceded in death by his son, Terry Cousins, in 2000.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bea Cousins of Rancho Bernardo; daughters and sons-in-law Mellody and Larry Putman of Clovis, Tina and Bob Lopez of Los Banos, and Anita and David Warczakowski of Poway; brothers Leonard Cousins of Norridge, Ill., and George Cousins of Appleton, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation and viewing are scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 8, at California Funeral Alternatives, 1020 E. Pennsylvania Ave. in Escondido.
A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Pomerado Road Baptist Church, 13230 Pomerado Road in Poway.

Jack Leopold, 84
ESCONDIDO - Jack Leopold, 84, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007.
Born March 10, 1922, in Nazareth, Pa., he lived in Escondido for 20 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Escondido and the Escondido Country Club. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University. He enjoyed golf, Senior Gleaners and Habitat for Humanity.
Mr. Leopold was preceded in death by his parents, George and Jeannette Leopold; brother Donald Leopold; and sister Doris Douglas. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Leopold of Escondido; sons and daughters-in-law Randy and Sheri Leopold of Encinitas and Jay and Danielle Leopold of Leucadia; daughter and son-in-law Laurie and Rick Lockman of Carlsbad; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A private cremation is planned.

Marvin Krichman, 92
SAN DIEGO - Marvin L. Krichman, 92, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, in La Jolla.
He was born April 25, 1914, in Cleveland. He lived in Escondido from 1952 to 1963. He was president of the Escondido Downtown Merchants Association. He owned commercial and residential real estate in Escondido, including the Draper's and Damon's building, where his dress shop, The Mercantile, was located from 1952 to the mid-1990s. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the Judge Advocate Corps and achieved the rank of captain. He was a supporter of the visual and performing arts in San Diego County for 20 years. He was a founder of the Judaic Studies program at UC San Diego and vice chairman of the Board of Visitors. He was a member of the Congregation Beth Israel.
Mr. Krichman was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Rosalie Krichman, in 1996. He is survived by his son, Michael Krichman of San Diego; daughter-in-law Carmen Cuenca of San Diego; two granddaughters; and longtime companion, Francy Starr of San Diego.
Services have been held.

Mr. English was preceded in death by his wife, Joan English, in 2005. He is survived by his son, Greg English; daughters Marcia, Janice and Cheryl; brother, Wallace English; sister, Alice Linn; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ralston was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Ralston, in 1990. He is survived by his sons, Robert Ralston of Wildomar and Vance Ralston of Pomona; daughter, Sue Ralston of Wildomar; son-in-law, Dena Palmquist of Liberty Lake, Wash.; brothers-in-law Edward Esterley of San Juan Capistrano and Robert Esterley of Raytown, Mo.; and five grandchildren.
