Ned Hatch

Ned Hatch, 90, passed away peacefully at home, September 4, 2004, surrounded by loving caregivers. Ned's family wishes to thank the compassionate staff at Vitas Hospice. With your help, he died as he lived, with grace and dignity.

Ned was born to William and Elizabeth Hatch on January 5, 1914, in Tustin, California. He was the oldest of six children: Wilma, Lucille, Betty, Richard and Marilynne.

The Hatch family businesses included a chicken ranch and orange tree orchards. Following graduation from Tustin High School, Ned attended the University of California in Berkeley. It was there that he met his lifetime partner, Nan. They were married over Labor Day weekend in 1941, and just recently celebrated 63 years together!

Following graduation from Cal, Ned became an accountant with Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, where he spent the war years. After 30 years of service at Lockheed, he became a tax accountant for the State of California.

He enjoyed many Saturdays playing golf. One of his proudest moments was a "hole in one" at the Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

In their retirement years, Ned and Nan moved from Pasadena to Carlsbad, so they could be "closer to the mighty ocean." Ned became a devoted volunteer and gardener at Quail Botanical Gardens. They found a spiritual home at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Del Mar and enjoyed the companionship of many new friends in the Sea Cliff neighborhood.

Ned was a kind and gentle man, a loving father to Susan and John, and a devoted grandfather to Tyler, Tish, Judd, Jessica and Tamara. Because of Ned's life, the world is a better place.

The Braille Institute was a tremendous help to Ned in his battle with macular degeneration. Memorial donations may be made in Ned's honor to the Braille Institute of San Diego, 4555 Executive Drive, San Diego, CA 92121.
