Memorial

H. Curtis 'Curt' Reed

May 6, 1917 - Aug. 10, 2006

H. Curtis Reed was born in Oneida, N.Y., but spent most of his early life in Potsdam, N.Y., where he lived until graduating from Clarkson College in 1938 with a business degree. He was called into the Army as a private in 1939 after briefly working in Hartford, Conn., for a business machine company. During this time he met the love of his life, Loraine "Vickie" McVicar, whom he married right after Pearl Harbor in 1941. Four years later, with the rank of major, Curt left the army to begin what would be a steady climb up the executive ladder to the presidency of several insurance companies. Even in retirement, Curt began another consulting business in La Jolla.

He was always heavily involved with community service, maintaining strong ties with his church, the Boy Scouts, Rotary, political fundraising, his alumni organization and others, as well as serving on various boards of directors throughout the country.

His volunteer and business efforts were often rewarded with honors, but two that were most significant were being named the Hartford Jaycees Outstanding Young Man of the Year in 1952 and honored by Gov. George Romney with the Michigan Minuteman Award for his contribution to Michigan industry in 1966.

Curt was always known for his friendly demeanor, quick laugh, and a willingness to help anyone, as well as his passion for the game of golf. He was blessed with 64 years of marriage with Vickie. In addition to his wife, he leaves his daughter, Janice, of Livingston, Texas; his son, Allan of Glen Arbor, Mich.; five grandsons; and three great-granddaughters. A son, Donald, predeceased him.

A memorial service was held at the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, Solana Beach, Calif., on Monday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer's Association or the Elizabeth Hospice.
