VISTA - Meredith Lee Nichols Smith, 54, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.
Born Nov. 14, 1948, in Brockton, Mass., she lived in Vista for 17 years and in Point Loma for 15 years previously. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, James and Katherine Smith and Jimmy Starr, all of Vista; daughter and son-in-law Jennith and Stephen Schleier of New South Wales, Australia; brother and sister-in-law Mr. and Mrs. "D" Nichols of Massachusetts; and grandchild Haley Smith.

ESCONDIDO - David H. Oliver, 83, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003.
Born Dec. 22, 1919, in Minneapolis, he was a mechanical engineer in the aerospace industry. He was a member of the Shriners and the Masons.
Mr. Oliver is survived by his daughter, Nancy J. Oliver of Tucson, Ariz.; son John D. Oliver of Pine Valley; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Deane Anderson, 78
GARDNERVILLE, Nev. - Deane C. Anderson, 78, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, in Carson City, Nev., of heart failure.
Born Dec. 23, 1924, in Los Angeles, he lived in Gardnerville for one year and in Fallon, Nev., for 29 years previously.
He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a Valley Center rancher. He attended Cal Poly San Luis Obisbo. He was a member and past officer of N.A.T.R.C. He enjoyed golf and fishing.
Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Tomac Anderson.
He is survived by his sons, Chuck Anderson of Escondido, Steven Tomac of Nevada, and C.J. Tomac of Oregon; daughters Vicky Fry of Gardnerville, Chris Perez of Poway, Kathy and Debbie Tomac, both of Oregon, Sandy Tomac of Nevada, Cheryl Tomac of Vista and Linda Tomac of Connecticut; sister Barbara Tice-Davis of Yorba Linda; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

James Ashida, 83
MANHATTAN BEACH - James H. Ashida, 83, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003.
Born Feb. 4, 1920, in Kent, Wash., he lived in Manhattan Beach for five years. He was a former 20-year resident of North County. He retired in 1980 from the Department of State. He was a retired major in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido.
Mr. Ashida was preceded in death by his wife, Sachiko Ashida, on June 3, 1998.
He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Mark and Lishet Ashida, and Nilson Ashida, all of Seattle; daughter and son-in-law Ellyn Ashida and Paul Poareo of Manhattan Beach; and grandchildren Erik, Ingrid, Daniel and Joseph.

CRESTLINE - John Henry Dennis III, 56, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in Mountain Community Hospital inLake Arrowhead of cardiac arrest.
Born in Quantico, Va., he lived in Crestline for 25 years. He lived in Carlsbad from 1954 to 1965.
He was a self-employed carpenter for 35 years.
Mr. Dennis is survived by his wife, Stacia Dennis of Crestline; daughter Jessica Kane of Phoenix; sons John Henry Dennis IV and Dalton Clive Dennis, both of Crestline; sisters Lorraine Irving and Anita Dennis, both of Oceanside and Eileen Brindly of Cayucos; and granddaughter Jewel Kane.

RAMONA - Darrell Duane Long, 65, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at his home.
Born Oct. 25, 1937, in Hollis, Okla., he lived in Ramona for 50 years. He worked for Long Bros. Plastering and R.E. Long Stucco, both of Ramona.
He served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He studied to become an electrician.
Mr. Long is survived by his companion, Patsy Kosut of Ramona; sons John Long, Darrell Long, Brian Long and Arlon Long, all of Ramona; daughter Barbara Hayes of Ramona; brother Ronnie Long of Ramona; half-sister Tonya Roberts of Vermont; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Charles Moore, 75
RAMONA - Charles J. Moore, 75, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at Pomerado Hospital of complications of diabetes.
Born March 2, 1928, in Peru, Ind., he lived in Ramona for 28 years.
He retired in May 2001, from Barona Casino. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3783.
Mr. Moore is survived by his wife of 43 years, Martha Moore of Ramona; sons and daughters-in-law Ben Jack and Sabrina Moore of Indio and Sean Christopher and Annette Moore of Ramona; daughters and sons-in-law Jeri and Bryan Smith of Escondido and Lysa and Ted Lane of Santa Clareta; and grandchildren Justin, Danny, Dustin, Jesse, Ashley and Andrew.

FALLBROOK - Ardyth Louise "Artie" Lattimer, 71, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at her home.
Born Oct. 1, 1931, in San Diego, she lived in Fallbrook for 59 years. She was a homemaker. She volunteered at the Angel Society Thrift Shop. She was a fan and cheerleader for Fallbrook High School.
She enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.
Mrs. Lattimer was preceded in death by her husband, William Ervin Lattimer, on Feb. 21, 1995.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Pauline Lattimer and Michael and Lucinda Lattimer, all of Fallbrook; daughters and sons-in-law Lynne and Larry Carroll of Post Falls, Idaho, and Erin and Bill Bright of Fallbrook; brother and sister-in-law Eugene "Bud" and Barbara Swearingen of Fallbrook; and 12 grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John D. Adams Jr. of San Clemente; grandchildren John D. Adams III and Elizabeth Griffin; and one great-granddaughter.

Douglas Lloyd, 85
RAMONA - Douglas George Lloyd, 85, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in San Diego.
Born Jan. 8, 1918, in Portsmouth, England, he lived in Ramona for two years. He owned Lloyd Fine Arts. He was a photography and watercolor instructor and artist. He wrote publications on microfilm systems and COM systems. He graduated from Portsmouth Junior Tech in 1936, the Royal Navy Extension College in 1943, and the U.S. Air Force Officer Command School in 1953.
He was a member of the British Royal Navy, St. Mary's in the Valley and the San Diego Watercolor Society. His photographs include exhibits of a WWII torpedo attack on the British battleship HMS Nelson in 1941, in a 24-foot display at the British Ministry of Information. He enjoyed chess, fishing, raising Koi fish, flying, art, photography, sailing and reading. He is listed in "Who's Who in the West," 1994, "Who's Who in America," 49th Edition, 1995, "Who's Who in the World," 12th Edition, 1995, and "International Men of Achievement," 1994.
Mr. Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy M. Lloyd, in 1984; sons Ian, in 1985 and Larry in 1998; and grandson Sean in 2002.
He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Jess and Debbie Lloyd of Escondido and Robert Lloyd of Titusville, Fla.; daughters and son-in-law Barbara Lloyd of San Diego and Robin and Rick Emmons of Albuquerque, N.M.; sister and brother-in-law Iris and Ben Marshall of Calgary, Canada; grandchildren Jessie, Amber, Steve, Ashley, Heather, Larry, Christa, George, Brian, Sammie, Tammie, Candi, Douglas and Taz; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at St. Mary's in the Valley in Ramona. Private interment will take place at a later date at St. Mary's in the Valley.

OCEANSIDE - Windy Tupelu Mataafa, 43, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.
Born April 10, 1960, in Twentynine Palms, he lived in Oceanside all his life. He was an assembler for ACDC Electronics.
Mr. Mataafa was preceded in death by his mother, Tu'u Mataafa, in 1964; and sister Pau Mataafa in 1972.

Dick Sherk, 81
OCEANSIDE - Dick Raymond Sherk, 81, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at his home of bladder and lung cancer.
He was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Long Beach. He was a plastering contractor. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II, where he was in the China-Burma-India Theatre. He was a scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a sculptor and enjoyed plants, bowling, and volunteering for the blind. He was a member of the Carlsbad Community Church.
Mr. Sherk was preceded in death by his parents, George and Sybil Sherk; and brothers George Jr. and Ivan. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Sherk; sons and daughters-in-law Dan and Ann of British Columbia, and Jerry and Ann of Encinitas; brother and sister-in-law Tom and Melvia Sherk of Rogue River, Ore.; sister and brother-in-law Karlie and Richard of Glendale, Ore.; grandchildren Jason, Jennifer, Hannah and Michael; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Carlsbad Community Church, 3175 Harding St. in Carlsbad with the Rev. Craig Cramblet officiating. His body was donated to UCSD Medical Center for medical research.

LEUCADIA - Charles "Popsie" William Stubbs, 77, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at his home of liver cancer.
Born March 26, 1926, in Detroit, he lived in Beacons Beach in Leucadia for 31 years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He received a bachelor of science degree in business from the University of Southern California in 1949. He was a member of the Advertising Club of San Diego and the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was chairman of the 29th Los Angeles Open in 1955.
He was a child actor in "Babes in Toyland," "They Shall Have Music," "Boys Town," "One Million BC," "
Angels with Dirty Faces," and others.
Mr. Stubbs is survived by his wife of 54 years, Hildegarde Stubbs of Leucadia; sons Tim Stubbs of Carlsbad, N.M., Tom Stubbs of Sonoma, Ted Stubbs of Kurtis Town, Hawaii, and T. Pat Stubbs of Del Mar; daughter Terry Christofk of Carlsbad; and grandchildren Aaron, Heather, Clinton, Allison, Jesse, Devin, Amanda, Gabe, Garrett, Cameron and Samara.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at noon Tuesday, Aug. 26, at St. John's Catholic Church in Encinitas.
Interment followed at 1:15 p.m. at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery in Oceanside.

Augustus 'Gus' Barnes
ESCONDIDO - Augustus Frederick John Barnes died peacefully in his sleep, at his home, Monday, August 18, 2003.
Born September 15, 1919, in Moreton's Harbour, Newfoundland, Canada, Gus lived in Escondido for 33 years. Gus worked for most of those years as a Realtor with Hanson-MacMillan Realty. His true vocation, however, was as a missionary, minister and elder in the Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Gus was active in this most loved work until the very day of his passing.
Gus is survived by his wife, Georgina Barnes; his daughter, Bonnie Lea Johnson of Laguna Nigel; his granddaughters, Mahogany Rose Lenard of San Francisco and Cambria Johnson of Laguna Nigel; and his sister, Ruth Dawe of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
A memorial service commemorating the life of Gus will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 30, 2003, at the Kingdom Halls of Jehovah's Witnesses, located at 2080 Encino Drive in Escondido.
Krista Madsen, 38
VISTA - Krista Ann Madsen, 38, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at her home.
Born Nov. 27, 1964, in Oceanside, she was raised in Carlsbad and lived in Vista for the last 15 years. She was a homemaker since 1990. She graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1982. She attended Palomar College and graduated from the University of Arizona in 1987, where she was a member of the Wildcat Softball Team. She was active in her children's activities, her church and Bible Study Fellowship.
Mrs. Madsen was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Virgil Hood and Benjamin F. Long.
She is survived by her husband of 15 years, Lynn Madsen of Vista; parents Charla Boodry and Fred Boodry of Carlsbad; paternal grandmother Ada Long of Oceanside; maternal grandmother Bea Hood of Carlsbad; daughters Laurel Madsen, Blair Madsen and Logan Madsen, all of Vista; brother Glen Boodry of Carlsbad; aunts Barbara Stone of Oceanside, Marshia Matthews of Riverside and Debi Long of San Diego; six cousins; and many wonderful friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for noon Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Riverview Evangelical Free Church, 4980 Sweetgrass Lane, Bonsall, CA 92003. Graveside service and interment will follow at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery in Oceanside.
