Suzanne Tjulander
December 24, 1939
February 7, 2007
Suzanne Tjulander passed away February 7, 2007, quite suddenly. She suffered a massive stroke following successful surgery for colon cancer.
She was born in Los Angeles, Calif., December 24, 1939, and lived most of her life in that area. She went to school in Lynwood and moved to Vista, Calif., in 1978.
Suzanne, along with her partner, Terrea Lea and B.J. Moore (deceased in 2002) have served the very popular "mini donuts" of the Donut Express at the Del Mar Fair since 1987 and were referred to as the "Golden Girls."
Suzie was funny, volatile and beautiful, as anyone will tell you. She was generous in all ways and a joy to be around.
Suzanne is survived by her partner of 34 years, Terrea Lea, of Vista, Calif., brother Raymond Tjulander and his wife, Barbara, two nieces, Kristin and Dana, two grandnieces, Shanea and Breeann, (all of Westlake Village, Calif.) and her mother, Louise and stepfather, George Eglinger of Reno, Nev.
Suzanne will be missed by everyone that she has come in contact with all of these years, but most of all by her close friends who will miss her quick and refreshing sense of humor as well as her overwhelming graciousness and generosity.
Terrea Lea, the only surviving "Golden Girl," will try hard to fill the void and continue to carry on the legacy of Suzanne Tjulander and The Donut Express.
Lloyd Len East
Lloyd Len East, age 95, passed away quietly on February 1, 2007, of natural causes. Lloyd was a 16 year resident of Hemet, Calif. Born December 23, 1911, to Cora Porter East, in Los Angeles, Calif., Lloyd was the eldest of six children. Married in 1936 to Helen Foster of Lakeside, Calif., they were married for 51 years and were the parents of three sons. Lloyd is survived by his three sons, Gerald, Ronald and Richard East; nine of 11 grandchildren; 21 of 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers; and his sister.
Lloyd was descended from a long line of Mormon pioneers and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in several positions, including branch president of the then Fallbrook Branch, counselor to the Bishop, Ward Clerk, stake missionary, home teacher and others. Lloyd loved the church and serving in any way he could. He especially loved serving and being in the temples. He was a truly faithful member and loved greatly by the other members of his congregations for his kindness, cheerful and welcoming demeanor, friendly handshakes and always having candy for the children hidden in his suit pocket.
Lloyd grew up moving between Arizona, Utah and California. As a teenager, Lloyd worked to help support his family by working in mines. As a young adult and throughout World War II he worked as a design engineer in the aircraft industry. Lloyd later moved to Fallbrook, Calif., and lived there for 24 years while he and Helen raised chickens to sell the eggs and had avocado groves and also started his own business as a general contractor.
Lloyd built several homes and contracted to build several church buildings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Mormon Church), including the buildings in Fallbrook, Westminster, Vista and Indio, Calif. Lloyd and Helen lived in Argentina for three years and built three Mormon Chapels and during that time toured much of South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Chili.
Returning to the States meant a life change for Helen and Lloyd as they moved to Arizona, and became involved in raising several of their grandchildren. Lloyd, Helen and two of their granddaughters moved to Montrose, Colorado, in 1979 to be by their son, Richard, and his family. Lloyd loved living in Colorado, where he could go fishing and RV camping at a moment's decision. He enjoyed being out in nature.
Lloyd also liked to grow a food garden each year, to invent and to improve on and redesign tools and items already invented. He loved his family and tried to be the best person he could be. He was a kind man with a very subtle, poker-face sense of humor. About four years after his wife, Helen, passed away, Lloyd moved to Hemet, where he lived until his passing. He will be missed and yet we are happy that he is once again with his beloved wife and other family and friends and in care of our Heavenly Father
Interment will be at Nuevo Memory Garden in Ramona.
John Sherman Hewitson
September 27, 1927 - February 9, 2007
John Hewitson, passionate teacher, environmentalist, fly fisherman, husband and father, died peacefully at home, with hands held by his daughters, and good friends around his bedside.
Rock solid and true of heart, John instructed to the end how to live well, with deep and unwavering commitment to family, friends, community, and the Earth.
Born in Los Angeles in 1927, John graduated from South Pasadena - San Marino High School in 1945, entered University of Southern California that fall, but withdrew after one year to serve his country with an 18-month tour of duty at Army Camps Beale and Stoneman.
After the service, he went back to school and graduated from Whittier College in 1951. It was while student teaching at Whittier that he met his lifelong love, Diane Gregory, and married her in June of 1955. To all who knew them, theirs was a true marriage, partnership and adventure that spanned 48 years. It would be 1965, after starting his career teaching high school biology in Perris, and expanding his family by two daughters, before John completed his Masters in Biology at Humboldt State College.
In 1962, John moved his family to Encinitas, where he devoted 26 years to enlightening, empowering and inspiring biology students at San Dieguito High. He was on the cutting edge of field biology with his innovative Biology II class, the inspiration for the AP Environmental Science classes of today. Both students and staff came to know, and to never forget, John Hewitson as an impassioned and dedicated environmentalist, leading sit-ins in the 1970s and leading many young people to follow their passion into science and environmental work.
John followed his passion for fly fishing across the globe to New Zealand several times, the first as a Fulbright Scholar in 1960, a newsworthy event. He spent years frequenting local lakes and mountain streams, "chasing fish," and appreciating the land. Whether collecting insects, painting, hiking, writing, tying flies, or camping with his family in Montana and Wyoming, (chasing more fish), he was always learning, always teaching.
After his retirement from San Dieguito High in 1988, John devoted the next 16 years to spending time with, and then caring for, his beloved Diane until her death from Parkinson's in 2004. He was a loving, caring husband, father, and grandfather, a role he increasingly enjoyed over the past few years, and a true and loyal friend. His light, love, and brilliance will be terribly missed by his daughters, Laurie Rothman and Jennifer Hewitson; sons-in-law Ken Rothman and Bart Denson; grandchildren Sarah and Zoe Rothman, and Gianni and India Denson. We wish they could have known him longer and hope his flame will light within them the same gift of passion.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24 at 11 a.m. at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church, 890 Balour Drive in Encinitas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John Hewitson's memory to The Nature Conservancy, 4245 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203-1606, or Planned Parenthood Federation of America, 434 West 33rd St., New York, NY 10001.
Robert John Courson
Robert John "Bob" Courson, 79, died on February 5, 2007, of leukemia in La Costa, Calif.
Bob was born on July 19, 1927, in Traverse City, Michigan, the son of William and Emma Courson. He graduated from Traverse City High School, where he starred in varsity basketball. He served in the U.S. Army as a surgical technician in 1945. He attended Central Michigan State University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
Bob was manager for Montgomery Ward stores in Tiffin and Bowling Green in Ohio, and in Manistee, Muskegon and Petoskey in Michigan. In Traverse City, he was a jack of all trades, selling restaurant equipment, assisting a draftsman, managing fruit orchards, working as a fruit plant manager for Del Monte and as a shipping and receiving manager for United Technologies.
Bob lived in North County for 20 years and was employed at Edco Distributors in Vista for 12 years before retiring. He enjoyed working out at the Encinitas
YMCA and walking in our beautiful lagoons.
Bob was a kind and gentle man, non-judgmental and accepting everyone for what they were. He was dearly loved by his companion of 18 years, Ruth "Joy" Orner, of La Costa, his sons, Bert (Karen), of Eastport, Michigan, Michael (Jane) of Redway, California, and daughter Penny Smith of Norfolk, Virginia. His seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren miss him very much.
The family suggests that contributions in his name may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 9150 Chesapeake Drive, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92123, or San Diego Hospice and Palliative Care, 4311 Third Ave., San Diego, CA 92103.
Joe Pierce

The family moved to Idaho, in 1939, to try their luck at gold mining near the Snake River. In 1940 they moved to Georgetown, Calif., to work at the Pigeon Roost gold mine, and then back to Los Angeles in the fall of 1940, where Joe graduated from Huntington Park High School in 1945.
During his junior year of high school, while on a hayride, he met Viola Lundgren. The couple were married in 1948 at a small ceremony in Las Vegas.
Joe and Viola moved to Escondido, Calif., in 1956, where they raised their family in what was then a small town far from Los Angeles. Joe built a number of homes, apartment buildings, bars, and restaurants in Escondido. In 2000 he retired from the restaurant business and in 2002 he moved back to the Gold Country in Northern California.
Joe Pierce led a colorful and interesting life. He had lofty expectations of his children and often had them doing jobs that would otherwise be performed by adults. He had a terrific sense of humor and very little ego. He was a hard working risk-taker, but not a fool. Joe loved his family and he took every opportunity to pass on his wisdom and experience to them in his soft-spoken and gentle way. He gave them a tough role model to follow, but he also gave gentle encouragement when they needed it most.
Aurel Joseph "Joe" Pierce Jr. is survived by his wife, Viola, of 58 years; daughters Leslie (Frank) Schwartz of Dutch Flat, Calif., Laurie (Greg) Calac of Auburn, Calif.; sons Aurel Joseph Pierce III of Phoenix, Arizona; Carter (Lisa) Pierce of Auburn, Calif.; Mark (Jane) Pierce of Del Mar, Calif.
