Margaret Phalen, 78
Rancho Bernardo - Margaret Phalen, 78, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, of cancer.
She was born in 1925 in Highland Park. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Democratic Party and Escondido High School alumni groups. She graduated from Escondido High School in 1944.
Mrs. Phalen was preceded in death by her sons, Frank and Mark Jr.; and her husbands, Mark Everett Darrough in 1976 and James Phalen.
She is survived by her children, Susan Darrough, Patricia Darrough Holm, Joseph Darrough, Katie Phalen, Molly Phalen, Martha Raaka, James Phalen and Patrick Phalen; brothers James Wolfe, Ed Wolfe and Jack Wolfe; sister Julie Mulvaney; sister-in-law Marion Phalen-McCarley; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at St. Rafael Church in Rancho Bernardo with the Monsignors Michael J. Gallagher and Dennis L. Mikulanis officiating.

David Jacobsen, 68
SAN MARCOS - David Jacobsen, 68, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Scripps La Jolla.
Born Feb. 17, 1935, in Kalamazoo, Mich., he lived in San Marcos for nine years. He was a historian and enjoyed reading, water and off-road adventures.
Mr. Jacobsen was preceded in death by his mother, Leah Jacobsen, in 1968; and sister Mary Lee Flick in 1986.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Donna Jacobsen of San Marcos; daughters and sons-in-law Debra and Charles Mort of Golden Valley, Ariz., Lynne and Al Krahn of Payson, Ariz., Venus and Mike Rosone of Henderson, Nev., and Misti Jacobsen of Waynesboro, Pa.; brother and sister-in-law Richard and Janice Jacobsen of Watervelt, Mich.; grandchildren Angela, Chris, Ranay, Spencer and Schuyler; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Rancho San Marcos, 971 Borden Road in San Marcos.

Charles Mort, 71
NORTH COUNTY - Charles "Chuck" Mort, 71, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at his home.
Born Feb. 19, 1932, in Twin Falls, Idaho, he lived in North County for 51 years. He was a plumb master. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard.
Mr. Mort was preceded in death by his wife, Hallie J. Mort, in 2003.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Debbie Mort of Arizona, Larry and Laurie Mort of Oceanside, Ricky Mort of San Luis Obispo, Tony and Hollie McLean of San Marcos and Bradley McLean of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Tony Garrett of San Luis Obispo; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Viewing is scheduled from noon to 12:45 p.m. and funeral service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3990 Mesa Drive, in Oceanside with Bishop Jack Anderson officiating.

RANCHO SANTA FE - Shamus Locke, 79, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, of cancer.
Born Feb. 3, 1924, in Navan, County Meath, Ireland, he lived in Rancho Santa Fe for 13 years. He was an actor and producer for Ireland's Abbey Theatre. He was a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
Mr. Locke is survived by his wife of 13 years, Edith Locke of Rancho Santa Fe; son-in-law John Trapp of San Diego; brother Eric Locke of Ireland; and sister Carmel Burke of Ireland.

Louise Olsen, 77
ESCONDIDO - Louise H. Olsen, 77, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003.
Born Aug. 2, 1926, in Chicago, she lived in Escondido since 1999. She lived in Vista for 25 years previously. She was a homemaker and a member of the Vista Women's Club and the Sixties Plus Auxiliary of Vista.
Mrs. Olsen was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathryn Berquist, on March 12, 1999.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Kenneth Olsen of Escondido; daughters and sons-in-law Susan and Jim Napier of Tierrasanta and Jon Berquist of Escondido; and grandchildren Julia, Spencer, Kirstin and Elliot.
No services will be held at the request of the deceased.

Daniel DiGiovanni, 75
VISTA - Daniel Vincent DiGiovanni, 75, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, in Oceanside.
Born Aug. 27, 1928, in New Jersey, he lived in Vista for 20 years. He retired as the owner and chef of Henry's Restaurant in Carlsbad. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was past president and lieutenant governor of the Optimist Club of Oceanside.
Mr. DiGiovanni is survived by his wife of 12 years, Joanne DiGiovanni of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sons Anthony DiGiovanni of Longmont, Colo., and Patrick DiGiovanni of Colorado Springs; brothers Joseph DeJohn of Oceanside, Jerry DiGiovanni of Florida, and Fred DeJohn of New Jersey; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Viewing is scheduled from 9 to 10 a.m. and funeral service at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

CARLSBAD - Herbert A. Reagan, 74, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at his home of a stroke.
Born April 22, 1929, in Galveston, Texas, he lived in San Diego County for 43 years. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, after 30 years as a master gunnery sergeant.
Mr. Reagan was preceded in death by his stepson, Keith E. Clark, on April 21, 2000.
He is survived by his stepsons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Judi Clark of Vista, Scott and Kathleen Clark of Oceanside and Eric and Joelle Clark of Idaho; daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Bill Mueller of Texas City, Texas, and Peggy and Carlos Portugal of Mesa, Ariz.; grandchildren Paul, John, Wendy, Billy, Kenna, Valerie, Lacey, Ryan, Bobbi-Rose, Tiffany, Hunter and Anna; and 11 great-grandchildren.

VISTA - Sawyer Benjamin Sherwood, 8, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at his home of adrenoleuko-dystrophy.
Born Nov. 16, 1994, he lived in Vista for three years. He attended school at Beaumont Elementary School.
He played baseball for the Vista National Little League on the T-Ball Reds and Pirates and the Rookie Dodgers.
Sawyer is survived by his parents, Janis and Bill Sherwood of Vista; and sisters Amanda Sherwood of Vista and Jennifer Knapp of Spokane.

Born Aug. 16, 1936, in Oklahoma, he lived in Oceanside for 37 years.
He was an auto technician for an emergency road service.
Mr. Grays is survived by his father, Jesse Grays Sr. of Muskogee, Okla.; brothers Jesse Grays Jr., Orstell Grays and Velvet Grays, all of Wichita, Kan.; and Stacy Grays of San Diego; sisters Ethel Grays and Jomarion Grays, both of Wichita, Debra Grays of El Cajon and Linda Eaton of Bedford, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Ronald Dusenberry, 68
OCEANSIDE - Ronald James Dusenberry, 68, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Village Square NRC in San Marcos of complications of emphysema.
Born Sept. 16, 1935, in Danbury, Conn., he lived in Oceanside for 32 years.
He retired as a master gunnery sergeant in January 1974 after serving 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. His service included Camp Lejeume, N.C., Japan, security at the American Embassy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Hawaii, Camp Pendleton and two tours of duty in Vietnam.
Mr. Dusenberry was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Laura Dusenberry.
He is survived by his daughters, Laurie Oppenheimer of Fredericksburg, Va., and Teresa Dusenberry of Oceanside; sister Ann Marie Dusenberry of Bethel, Conn.; grandchildren Kathryn, Amanda, Brian and Bryce; and former wife Norma Dusenberry of Oceanside.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 1147 W. Discovery in San Marcos with the Rev. George officiating.

Born April 14, 1924, in Moron, Cuba, she lived in Pleasant Care of Vista for four years. She was a retired nurse. She was a member of the City of Hope in Duarte, Golden Age Club of Monrovia, and Santa Anita Senior Citizen of Arcadia.
Mrs. Alvarez was preceded in death by her husband, Felix M. Alvarez; and son Felix M. Alvarez.
She is survived by her daughter, Tamara Alvarez of Oceanside; brothers Digna Chavez and Ramon Chavez, both of Havana, Cuba; and grandchild Cristo Marie Alvarez.

ESCONDIDO - Colleen R. Miles, 73, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003.
Born July 5, 1930, in Indianapolis, she lived in Escondido for 16 years. She was a travel agent for 25 years, at Anderson Travel and Miles of Travel previously. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Escondido.
Mrs. Miles is survived by her husband of 45 years, Jimmy W. Miles of Escondido; daughters Kathy Peltier of Tempe, Ariz., Susan Swanson and Lori Grimes, both of Escondido, and Janie Miles of Papua, New Guinea; mother Helen Alexander of Martinsville, Ind.; and brothers Frank Alexander of Martinsville and Michael Alexander of Courtland.
A funeral service is scheduled for 3 p.m Friday, Oct. 10, at Bethel Baptist Church, 855 Brotherton Road in Escondido. Her cremains will be scattered at sea.

RAMONA - Ruthe Louise Zeigler, 28, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003.
Born July 29, 1975, in Torrance, she lived in Ramona since 1978. She graduated from Ramona Adult School. She enjoyed music, singing, arts and crafts, floral arranging and her cat, Tessie.
Ms. Zeigler was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Zeigler Sr. She is survived by her mother, Linda Zeigler Olsen of Ramona; brother Raymond Zeigler Jr. of Ramona; sisters Cindy DuPont of Menifee and Jenny Andrews of Ramona; and two grandmothers.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at New Life Assembly in Ramona.
Private interment at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier will be held.

Louise H. Olsen
Born August 2, 1926, to Helen and Rothard Gittings, in Chicago, Illinois.
At a very early age Louise and her mother moved to Pasadena, California.
She attended Pasadena City Schools and Pasadena City College. She was employed by Pacific Bell in Pasadena during the latter part of WWII.
On March 16, 1946, she married her long-time boyfriend, Kenneth, and they continued to live in Pasadena until his retirement from the Pasadena Police Department in 1974, when they built a home in Vista, where they resided until 1999.
Louise is survived by her husband, Kenneth; daughter Susan and son-in-law James Napier; granddaughter Julia Napier and grandson Spencer Napier, of Tierrasanta; and by son-in-law Jon Berquist; granddaughter Kirstin Berquist and grandson Elliot Berquist of Escondido.
Louise was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathryn Berquist, on March 12, 1999; and also by her half-sister, Barbara and stepbrother Eugene.
Louise enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling, but most of all her family, especially her wonderful grandchildren. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed her bridge-playing friends.
She was an active member of the Vista Women's Club in the 70s and 80s, and was currently president of the Sixties Plus.
At her request there will be no services, but her family requests any memorial contributions be made to the Elizabeth Hospice, 125 W. Crest Street, Escondido, CA 92025.
May she rest in peace.

Betsy Simon Cramer
1962 - 2003
We sadly lost our sweet daughter, Betsy on Oct. 2, 2003.
She will be so missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her mom and Dad, Pat and Phil of Valley Center. By her ex-husband, Jim Cramer. They never stopped loving each other. Her three sisters, Susan of Temecula, Nancy (Duane) of Boise, Idaho, Kim (Grady) of Phoenix; and many nieces and nephews who adored her.
A memorial service will be held in the garden of Pat & Phil Simon on Saturday, Oct. 11, at noon.

Mary Mooney
Mary Sinclair Mooney, 90, of Carlsbad, California, widow of Herbert Slocum Mooney, M.D., died Friday, October 3, 2003. She was born August 1, 1913, in Newcastle, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of the late Edward Hubert Sinclair and Mary Eliza Harris Sinclair.
Mrs. Mooney was a member of First Congregational Church in Los Angeles, where in 1946 she started the church nursery school, which later became The Pilgram School serving grades K-12.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary Elanore "Bebe" (Russell) Grosse of Carlsbad, California, Jane Elma (Macauley) Carter of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Elizabeth Ella (Jim) Myers of Kenmore, Washington; two sons, Charles (Martha) Mooney, M.D. of Lexington, Kentucky, and Herbert S. (Chris) Mooney, Jr., M.D., of Longmont, Colorado; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers.
The family will be having a private memorial service at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California.

WILDOMAR -- Alma G. Sharp, 89, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at her home.
Born March 9, 1914, in Elbow Woods, N.D., she lived in Wildomar for more than 30 years. She was a homemaker for 70 years. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Frances of Rome in Lake Elsinore. She enjoyed gardening and crafting.
Mrs. Sharp is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Rhynes of Wildomar and Celia McCabe of Canyon Lake; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today, Oct. 7, at Wildomar District Cemetery.

HOMELAND -- Marion William Hasting, 80, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at his home of natural causes.
Born Aug. 7, 1923, in Ottumwa, Iowa, he lived in Homeland for 12 years. He was a self-employed machinist for 60 years in the aerospace industry. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Community First Church of God in Homeland and the Humane Society. He enjoyed model planes.
Mr. Hasting was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elizabeth Ashlock Hasting; wife, Norma J. Chaitovich Hasting, on Nov. 20, 2001, and daughter, Susan Cowart, in 1978. He is survived by his daughters, Judy Horn of Menifee, Linda Logue of Upland and Brandy Daniels of Germany; sons Jack Cowart of Roseville, Joel Hasting of Eldorado Hills and Robin Hasting of Stockton, Ill.; 22 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at Riverside National Cemetery, staging area No. 3 with the Rev. Takis Bogris officiating.

MURRIETA -- Edward Ralph Arroyo, 73, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, in Hemet.
Born Aug. 21, 1930, in Los Angeles, he lived in Wildomar for 15 years. He was an engine assembly supervisor at General Electric Aviation for 37 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a staff sergeant and received the Purple Heart.
Mr. Arroyo is survived by his wife, Gladys Arroyo of Wildomar; mother, Juanita Arroyo of Murrieta; son, Marlon Arroyo of Venice, Italy, daughters Susan Turley of Murrieta and Debbi Monte of Lake Elsinore; brother, Mike Arroyo of Montebello; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
