Memorials

Anna Mae (Perry) Koellmann

In her more than 91 years of life, she was filled with boundless energy, joy and enthusiasm. She gave freely of her knowledge and took great interest in the literary arts. From the time her children could sit up and hold a book she was either reading or teaching her children to read. It was under this guiding light that all six of her children formed a love of literature and books.

She also loved to write and draw illustrations. All her life she spent her spare time writing and attending writing courses and workshops on writing. She has boxes of manuscripts her family will cherish. She took her subjects from her life and the lives of her children and family. At 71 she attended the Writers and Editors Guild of San Diego workshop held by the California Press Women. On May 15, 1982, she was presented the "Par Excellence Award." It was the Tenth Annual Unpublished Writers contest, and the very first time they gave the Par Excellence Award. She took her youngest son with her to the luncheon. It was his birthday. He almost fell off his chair when she received the top honors given out.

She had talent in many fields such as accounting, modeling, fashion buying, and motel management. She worked most of her adult life. She started in the office of her father's dairy at age 15. She also worked in her uncle's Indian Trading Post in the Black Hills of South Dakota, where she met the love of her life Karl Koellmann. She and Karl also ran a trading post in Fort Defiance, Arizona, where her oldest son was born. She was the head bookkeeper for a small chain of department stores in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She became interested in fashion buying and turned down an opportunity to work in Paris, France, as the top buyer, as she did not want to be away from her family for long periods of time.

In the '60s and '70s she became involved in motel management in San Diego. She and Karl ran the Beach Cottages in Pacific Beach for the Frost Lumber Company for several years. When Karl died she took a position of the head housekeeper for the Padre Trails Inn in Old Town San Diego. At 72 she decided to attend the University of Nevada and studied creative writing and nursing. At 73 she moved to Escondido and worked at Las Villas Del Norte. She worked full time at night until the age of 82. She delighted in telling people she took care of "Old People."

A traditional Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint's graveside service is planned at 11 a.m., March 8. Her ashes will be interred at El Camino Cemetery.

We know her family and friends will miss her sense of humor and the joy of being around such a magnificent role model of a Mother and Grand Mother.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Children's Hospital, 2030 Children's Way, San Diego, CA 92123, and /or any Veterans of Foreign Wars charity in her name.
