ESCONDIDO - Marion Dorothy La Plante, 87, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born June 16, 1919, in Enderline, N.D., she lived in Escondido for 25 years. She was a cashier at a grocery store.
Mrs. La Plante was preceded in death by her husband, Francis La Plante, in 2002; and a great-granddaughter.
She is survived by her son, Lewis La Plante of Escondido; daughter and son-in-law Jackie and Dennis Papo of Escondido; half-sister Elaine Gill of Fullerton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services have been held with interment at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Escondido.

Viola Lesperance, 96
SAN MARCOS - Viola Blance Lesperance, 96, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, in Oceanside.
Born Aug. 7, 1910, in Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan, Canada, she lived in San Marcos for nine years. She was a teacher and taught all grade levels in Canada for 35 years. She was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos.
Mrs. Lesperance was preceded in death by her husband, Omer Lesperance, in 1987.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Marguerite and Robert
McGowan of San Marcos, and Jacqueline Lesperance and Raymond Villeneuve of Quebec City, Canada; son and daughter-in-law Richard and Alicia Lesperance of Fresno; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
All services will be in Montreal, Canada, with interment at Cimetiere Le Repose St. Francois d'Assise.

OCEANSIDE - Mel Tracy, 76, died of cancer Friday, Dec. 1, 2006.
He was born June 18, 1930, in Hinsdale, Ill. He retired in 1995 from Cal Mat in Oceanside.
Mr. Tracy was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley
Tracy; and son Steven Tracy.
He is survived by his sisters and brother-in-law, Marion and John Orlock of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and Jeanne Frederick of Oceanside; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the clubhouse at 3570 Calevero Lane in Oceanside.

She was born Oct. 6, 1925, in California.

PALA - Katherine Louise Gibbs, 99, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, in Escondido.
Born Aug. 16, 1907, in Bath, N.Y., she lived in Pala for 30 years. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crafts and art.
Mrs. Gibbs was preceded in death by her husband, Malcom A. Gibbs, in 1984.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy Freeman of Pala; son Roger Gibbs of Pala; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

SAN MARCOS - Mary Jane Booth, 87, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at a local convalescent home.
Born Nov. 30, 1919, in Homestead, Fla., she lived in San Marcos for 18 years. She was a rapid packer for Fiberglass Corningware in Rhode Island for seven years.
Mrs. Booth was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Booth, in 2002.

Julius Puma, 62
RANCHO BERNARDO - Julius Vincent Puma, 62, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007.
Born Aug. 19, 1944, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in Rancho Bernardo for 26 years. He was an entrepreneur in the garment industry. He enjoyed classic cars, playing poker with family, reciting family history and building houses.
Mr. Puma was preceded in death by his father, Vincent Julius Puma, in 1993.
He is survived by his mother, Kathryn Puma of Rancho Bernardo; sons and daughters-in-law Vincent and Judy L. Puma of Rancho Bernardo and Jason and Patricia Puma of Buena Park; daughter Melissa Kathryn Puma of Dania Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. and rosary recited at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary in Escondido.
A Mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday, Jan. 13, at St. Michael's Catholic Church with the Rev. Mel Monreal officiating.

Richard Osgood, 87
SANTA MARIA - Richard M. Osgood, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007.
Born Oct. 19, 1919, in Montana, he lived in Santa Maria for 15 years. He lived in Oceanside previously. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He retired in 1980 from Firestone & Rubber Co. He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.
Mr. Osgood was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Osgood, in 1990.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Garrett and Karen Osgood of Santa Barbara and Robert and Joanne Osgood of Costa Mesa; daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Mark Lyons of San Clemente; sister Mary Chenowith of Santa Maria; and two grandchildren.
Viewing is scheduled from 11 a.m. to the start of the funeral service at noon Thursday, Jan. 11, at Oceanside Mortuary, 602 S. Coast Highway in Oceanside.

POWAY - Marjorie Belle Spice, 88, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007.
Born July 30, 1918, in Cleveland, she lived in Poway for 38 years. She was a kindergarten teacher at Cornerstone Christian School from 1969 to 1983. She was a member of Emmanuel Faith Community Church.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, reading and singing.
Mrs. Spice is survived by her husband of 65 years, Alfred Spice of Poway; daughters and sons-in-law Joyce and Roger Stafford of Escondido, Marilyn and Archie Legge of Pliny, W.Va., Doreen Hanke of Yakima, Wash., and Gloria and J.D. OCEANSIDE - Frances Escalera, 79, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, in Vista.
Born Sept. 4, 1927, in Indio, she lived in Oceanside for 75 years. She retired in 1972 from civil service at Camp Pendleton.
Mrs. Escalera is survived by her husband of 50 years, Lorenzo Escalera of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law Mario and Ignacia Sandoval of Texas, Lorenzo Jr. and Josefa Escalera, and David Escalera, all of Oceanside, and Daniel Escalera of Escondido; daughters and sons-in-law Marcia Ann Bazquez and Dolores and Alfredo Nunez, all of Oceanside, Cecilia Gonzalez and Jacinto Noberon of Vista, and Novela and Jose Gastelum of Escondido; sister Helen Montes of Los Angeles; 21 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

OCEANSIDE - Mary M. McMullen, 88, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007.
Born Dec. 22, 1918, in Marston, Mo., she lived in Oceanside for 10 years. She was a longtime member of San Marcos Lutheran Church.
Mrs. McMullen was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph McMullen, in 1975. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rondal and Janice Scandrett of Wellington, Nev.; daughters and sons-in-law Kim and John Fitts of Maryland, and Karen and Edward Eden of Oceanside; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

James Turner, 64
OCEANSIDE - James F. Turner, 64, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007.
Born Aug. 12, 1942, in Oceanside, he lived there all his life. He retired in 1998 from the City of Oceanside Water Department. He chaired the San Diego County Water Authority Board and sat on the SDCWA as a representative for Oceanside and other metropolitan water districts.
Mr. Turner is survived by his wife of 23 years, Thelma Turner; daughters and sons-in-law Lorainne and James Johnson, Deby and Robert Alexander, Kimberly Mays, and Michele and Louis Waterbury; sons and daughter-in-law Curtis and Cindy Turner and Aaron J. Turner; sister Charlie Iveson; brother Nohe Turner; and seven grandchildren.

Anthony Shafer, 17
POWAY - Anthony Paul "Tony" Shafer, 17, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, in San Diego.
Born Jan. 10, 1989, in Lancaster, he lived in Poway for 15 years. He was a student and president of the robotics club at Poway High School. He was on the United Nations debate team and a mentor at Valley Elementary for the Spanish speaking. He collected firearms and knives. He enjoyed playing guitar, the beach, paintball, dogs and spending time with his brother.
Tony is survived by his mother, Kim Marie Shafer of Rancho Bernardo; father David Bruce Shafer of Poway; and brother Jonathon Shafer of Rancho Bernardo.
A graveside service is scheduled for noon Thursday, Jan. 11, at Dearborn Cemetery. A funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m., at Grace Lutheran Church, 643 W. 13th Ave. in Escondido.

Charles Brown, 84
LAKE SAN MARCOS - Charles Francis Brown, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas.
Born Sept. 11, 1922, in Jersey City, N.J., he lived in Lake San Marcos for five years. He retired after 30 years as the fire chief of the city of San Gabriel Fire Department. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was an avid dancer and belonged to the Lake San Marcos Dance Club.
Mr. Brown is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris H. Brown of Lake San Marcos; son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Patti Brown of Austin, Texas; daughter and son-in-law Carol and Gary Larsen of Alamo; sister Henrietta Mason of Linden, N.J.; and two grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos with the Rev. Al Heyrosa officiating.

Mrs. De Graaf is survived by her husband of 19 years, Cornelius De Graaf of San Diego; son Cornelius De Graaf of Ramona; daughter Karen M. Dowle of Ramona; brothers Edward Vangrouw of Idaho, and Jack Vangrouw of Fresno; sister Jean Wagner of Redlands; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

John Davey Jr., 82
SAN MARCOS - John Raymond Davey Jr., 82, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at his home.
Born Sept. 5, 1924, in Abington, Pa., he lived in San Marcos for 26 years. He was a business owner for 45 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Meadow Lake Community Church. He enjoyed reading and writing.
Mr. Davey was preceded in death by his son, John Davey III, in 1993. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Jennifer Davey of San Marcos; daughters and son-in-law Marianne Davey of San Marcos and Cynthia and Bruce Durant of Penona, Australia; stepdaughter Lisa Engstrom of La Jolla; sister and brother-in-law Virginia and Scott Neiman of Panama City, Fla.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Meadow Lark Community Church, 1918 Redwing in San Marcos. A private cremation is planned.

William Bucher, 72
SAN MARCOS - William Eugene Bucher, 72, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.
Born June 22, 1934, in Escondido, he lived in San Marcos all his life. He retired after 36 years at San Diego Gas & Electric as an underground inspector supervisor. He served in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Escondido High School in 1953. He was a San Marcos Volunteer Firefighter for 36 years. He was a past president of the San Marcos High School Booster Club, a member of the Richland Elementary School Parents Club, San Marcos Youth Baseball, his grandchildren's soccer clubs, and a Mason for about 40 years. He was a charter member of the San Marcos Historical Society.
Mr. Bucher was preceded in death by his brothers, Norman Bucher, in 1991, and Walter Bucher in 1999. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sue Bucher of San Marcos; sons and daughters-in-law Steve and Karen Bucher of San Marcos and Kevin and Debbie Bucher of Long Beach; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel, with the Rev. Sam Brumit officiating. Private interment at San Marcos Cemetery is planned.

Ruth Kent Murray
Ruth Kent Murray passed away on December 24, 2006, at home. She had been weakened by osteoporosis during the past year. Ruth was born in Utica, New York, on December 29, 1923. She graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in music teaching. This was the start of her activities as a piano teacher for 35 years. She was much beloved by her students and their families. Music filled her life and spirit. Ruth's cheerfulness and enthusiasm brought inspiration, energy and happiness to many.
She and her husband, Bill, lived for many years in Encino, California, with their two children, Douglas and Robert. Ruth and Bill retired to Escondido 20 years ago, where they played tennis and enjoyed concerts and walks. They also traveled the world. They were married for over 60 years. Ruth also had a lifelong interest in English literature. Their son, Dr. Robert Murray and his wife, Cathy, live in Seattle with their two children, Alex and Graeme. Her husband, Bill, lives in Escondido. Their son, Douglas, lives in Escondido. Ruth will be in our hearts forever.
John L. Floyd
John L. Floyd passed away on January 3, 2007, at Glenbrook Skilled Nursing in Carlsbad, California. He was a longtime resident of North San Diego County and a retired attorney.
He was born February 1, 1915, at Seneca, South Carolina, and was a graduate of Clemson University and Cal Western Law School in San Diego. He was admitted to the California State Bar in 1964 at age 48 and practiced law in Escondido until he retired. He served as an infantry officer in World War II.
Mr. Floyd was a former member of the Escondido Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. in 1969 he served as board chairman of the Escondido branch of the Salvation Army. He was cofounder of the Lillie Hawkins Floyd Scholarship Trust at Clemson University. He was a member of the National Society of Poets and the author of "The Call of the Enoree," an autobiographical sketch of his young life on the Enoree River in South Carolina.
He was married to Virginia Wilhelm Floyd who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Sally P. Floyd; sister Cathryn Graham Mitchell of Chester, South Carolina; two children, Susan Floyd of Poway and Alice Floyd Cason of San Rafael; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private.
Duard 'Andy' Wright Andrews
Born August 25, 1937, in Hannibal, Missouri, died January 5, 2007, in Poway, California.
Duard was known by "Dude" or "Andy" to both friends and family over the years. To most, it was always Andy.
Andy is survived by his wife of 32 years, Peggy; his brother, Thomas of Odessa, Missouri; his daughter, Debra Foley of Mission, Kansas; his son, Thomas of Minnesota; his stepchildren, Rexine Stainbrook of Las Vegas, Nevada, Rhonda Marquez of Pahrump, Nevada, and Robert Hufford of Atascadero, California. He was preceded in death by his sister, Doris Jeconis of Kansas City, Missouri, and stepson Richard Qualls of Dodgeville, Wisconsin. Altogether there were 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Andy grew up in various places in Missouri, but at the ripe old age of 17, he decided to make his home in the U.S. Navy. He completed his high school education and also went to officers training school. He received many awards over the years of service including (1) Combat Action Ribbon (2) Presidential Unit Citation (3) Navy Unit Commendation Medal (4) two Navy Good Conduct Medals (5) China Service Medal (6) Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (7) National Defense Service Medal (8) Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars (9) Vietnam Cross of Gallantry (2nd Degree) (10) Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device (11) Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions (12) Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Poway-Bernardo Mortuary. Interment will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.
Wilbur Gene Remington
Wilbur Gene Remington, 82, a 50-year resident of Oceanside, Calif., passed away on January 2, 2007, at his home.
Born March 15, 1924, in Frankton, Indiana, to parents Nellie (Seward) and Cleveland Remington, he was the middle child of four boys (Raymond, Wilbur, Robert and Harold Remington). He lived and worked on the family farm while growing up.
Wanting to serve his country, he enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1942. During his military service, he married Genevieve Engelman, his childhood sweetheart. After his honorable discharge in 1944, he went to school and became a registered watchmaker in 1947. While still residing in Indiana, he and Genevieve had two children; a son, Neil Gene Remington, born July 8, 1949, and daughter Jody Remington, born April 26, 1955. In 1957 he and his family moved to Los Angeles, Calif., to receive treatment for his war injuries at the local Veteran#'s Hospital and to pursue a career in watch making and repair. During that time, he was employed by an aerospace firm building gyroscopes. He then moved to Oceanside, Calif., where he was employed as a watchmaker/jeweler for 32 years.
Will loved the ocean, took up sailing as a hobby and moored his boat at Oceanside Harbor. He was very knowledgeable and active in local politics. His appreciation of architecture was evident in his artistic ability. His greatest enjoyment came from woodworking, with his masterful skills best represented by his talents in marquetry.
He was preceded in death by his son, daughter, wife and brother, Harold. He is survived by his two brothers, daughter-in-law Sandra Johnson; his granddaughter, Lara (Remington) Melissa; and his great-granddaughters, Emma, Ana and Stella Melissa.
Visitation and graveside services will be held at Eternal Hills Mortuary, Oceanside, Calif., with visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, and graveside service at 12:30 Friday, Jan. 12.
He loved his country and always supported our troops and their service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be donated to the Disabled Veterans of America.
Joseph Thomas Scamporino, 40
FLORIDA - Joseph T. Scamporino, 40, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006.
Born Oct. 6, 1966, in Torrance, Calif.; although he resided in Florida, he was a one- time resident of Oceanside and Venice Beach, where he grew up.
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy, 1985 to 1989, and achieved a rank as a Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class and also served as ship Medic. He enjoyed spending time with his family, baseball, flying, riding his Harley and listening to music. He also wrote a book of which he was quite proud. Joseph had a funny sense of humor and made those around him laugh with his quick wit.
He is survived by his wife of seven years, Mariangela Scamporino; and their two children, Nicole and David and his eldest daughter, Sophia; parents Patrick and Linda Gomez; and his sisters, Doreen, Cindy, Aida and April; and brothers Shaun, Matthew, and Mark.
A Naval Honors ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery in San Diego followed by a memorial service from 3 p.m to 4 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Discovery (RSI) located at 560 South Melrose Drive, Vista, CA 92081, with Rev. Brian Andersen officiating.
Family and friends will join in fellowship immediately after services.
