William Frank Groscup
Feb. 23, 1941 - Feb. 22, 2007
"Bill" was born and raised in San Pedro, California, and attended San Pedro High School. He excelled in swimming and water polo and that is where he met his future wife, Kristine Bernsten. After graduating in 1958 he still remained in the San Pedro area working as a lifeguard, but he knew what his future was, and that was to become a firefighter. He met that goal in 1967 graduating from the fire academy and proudly starting work at Station 36 in Carson. His fellow firefighters all respected his work ethic and could not wait to go to work with Bill because he just made the job fun. Practical jokes and laughter were the order of the day but when people's lives were in danger there was no better man to be by your side than Bill. Many stories are told of him holding strong in the midst of out of control wildfires and saving the men and families around him. In 1972 he moved his family to Vista, Calif., and has lived there ever since except for a brief recreational visit to Page, Arizona, for four years. He still drove to work in Carson because that is where he loved to work and after 27 years of
dedicated service he decided to hang up his boots and turnouts. In 1998 Bill was stricken by cancer but his strong will to live and his faith in God pushed him even harder to conquer this demon. With tremendous courage and skilled doctors he fought to stay alive and with this fight he was able to see both his sons get married and the birth of two beautiful granddaughters. Bill was surpassed in death by his parents, Ben and Helene Groscup and his sister, Barbara Bassett. He is survived by his wife, Kristine; sons Erik Groscup and Kathy Phillips, Kurt Groscup and wife Jennifer; brothers Ben "Sonny" Groscup, wife Chris, Dick Groscup, wife Lil, Mike Groscup, wife Sue, sister Mary Keller, father-in-law and mother-in-law Walter and Mary Bernsten; granddaughters Madisen and Jorden; along with many nieces and nephews. All that knew him will miss his strength, smile and laughter.
Joseph Hinds
Joseph Hinds died peacefully at home in Redding, February 22, 2007, with family present. Although his body was failing, his mind was sharp to the end. He was a quiet mannered and truly selfless man, a genuine gentleman, who loved sports, traveling, and especially the California shoreline.
Born in Delta, Colorado, in 1920, he survived the Great Depression and later served in the Army Air Corp during WWII. He had a 30 year career in air traffic control. As a Republican he believed in the traditional values of Middle America. He was a loving husband and father married 48 years until the death of his wife, Bette, in 1995. His heart was in North County San Diego having resided in Fallbrook for 43 years. But he lived his last five years in the north state alternating between Redding and Smith River so as to be close to his son and daughter-in-law. He loved the beach.
He is survived by a daughter, Toni Johnson and son-in-law Bill Johnson of Syracuse, Indiana, a son Joseph of Fallbrook, and a son Steve and daughter-in-law Pati of Redding, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He loved and in return was loved by many. He will be terribly missed.
